Construction on Brisbane’s new Glasshouse Theatre has finished after a four-year delay.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Queensland Performing Arts Centre chief executive Rachel Healy today announced the theatre would be open to the public in March.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ms Healy said theatregoers could get their first glimpse of the theatre at a March 7 open day, with the first performances scheduled from March 27.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Anticipation about the opening date of the Glasshouse has been building for a very long time, so we wanted to give our community the first opportunity to explore,” Ms Healy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I encourage everyone to come and discover Queensland’s newest cultural superstar.”<\/p>\n

Construction began on the taxpayer-funded theatre in 2020 and was supposed to be open in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2022, the site was deluged by floods<\/a>, and in July 2024, one of the wavy glass panels was accidentally cracked by a knuckle boom crane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In May 2025, construction paused for several days because a worker received a static shock<\/a> while cleaning dust.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Architect Jayson Blight said the wavy glass facade was inspired by the Brisbane River.<\/p>\n

Mr Blight said the earthy yellow carpet was inspired by Queensland’s golden beaches.<\/p>\n

“Our approach was not to be like every other theatre around the world,” Mr Blight said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We wanted this building to be of this place, it relates to Queensland, its climate, and its colours.”<\/p>\n

Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the addition of the Glasshouse Theatre would make the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) the largest performing arts centre under one roof in Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Langbroek said it was expected the new theatre would increase QPAC’s visitor numbers by an extra 300,000 per year.<\/p>\n

“We know how spectacularly this will be received by Queensland audiences,” Mr Langbroek said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said the cost blowout would not be borne by the taxpayer, but by the construction company Lendlease.\u00a0<\/p>\n
