The case against a former Queensland State of Origin player accused of seriously assaulting a child has been before a court for the first time.

Joshua McGuire was arrested in December last year, following investigations by child protection officers.

The 35-year-old was charged with one count each of common assault and strangulation.

It is alleged both offences were committed against a child.

His matter was briefly heard in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Mr McGuire is on bail and did not appear in court.

His lawyer Emma Kearney told the court there had “been issue with this matter” and cited delays regarding the disclosure of the prosecution’s brief of evidence.

“Nothing has been disclosed to our office,” she said.

Ms Kearney told the court two statements were “particularly pertinent” to Mr McGuire being able to make changes to his bail conditions.

“The Crown has opposed all attempts to vary bail … we can’t reasonably make any application in the absence of that evidence,” she said.

A magistrate ordered the material be handed over by prosecutors within seven days and adjourned the case to be mentioned again in two weeks.

Mr McGuire previously played NRL for three teams including the Brisbane Broncos between 2009 and 2022.

He also represented the Maroons more than a dozen times.

The case against a former Queensland State of Origin player accused of seriously assaulting a child has been…

[9
64,63,36619,184210,234129,85
post-453389","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sports","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-brisbane-magistrates-court","tag-joshua-mcguire","tag-joshua-mcguire-charges","tag-sports
["GET
