{"id":454007,"date":"2026-02-02T17:39:38","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T17:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/454007\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T17:39:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T17:39:38","slug":"toby-to-continue-captaincy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/454007\/","title":{"rendered":"Toby to Continue Captaincy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__summary\">\n                The GIANTS have named their leaders for the 2026 AFL season.\n            <\/p>\n<p>Inspirational skipper Toby Greene will lead the GIANTS as captain once again in 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Originally named sole captain of the club by incoming coach Adam Kingsley ahead of the 2023 season, Greene will now enter his fourth straight campaign as standalone skipper of the GIANTS as they continue to chase their first AFL premiership.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>A ferocious leader who wears his heart on his sleeve, Greene has cemented himself as one of the game\u2019s best leaders, exemplified by being named the All-Australian captain in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Greene will be supported by three new vice-captains in 2026, with star midfielder Tom Green, dynamic defender Connor Idun, and ever-reliable key defender Jack Buckley rounding out the four-man leadership setup.<\/p>\n<p>The elevation of Green, Idun and Buckley to vice-captains reflects the club\u2019s strong focus on building leadership depth and continuity, with all three having demonstrated outstanding professionalism, competitiveness and buy-in to the standards and culture set by Kingsley and Greene.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trio will take over the vice-captaincy roles from club stalwarts Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio\u00a0who have graciously stepped aside to help the club\u2019s new era of leaders thrive.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>GIANTS Executive General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said it was great to have\u00a0locked away\u00a0the club\u2019s leadership\u00a0positions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby has been an exceptional leader for our\u00a0club\u00a0and it made perfect sense for him to continue to lead the club in 2026,\u201d McCartney said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last three years he\u2019s led our side brilliantly and we have no doubt\u00a0he\u2019ll\u00a0continue to do the same this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0also great to have Tom,\u00a0Connor\u00a0and Jack\u00a0take on expanded leadership roles\u00a0and\u00a0be\u00a0elevated to vice-captains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll three continue to show exceptional leadership qualities and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0great to have them continue to develop as leaders under Toby\u2019s guidance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d\u00a0also like to acknowledge the tremendous work and leadership of our two outgoing vice-captains,\u00a0Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0done\u00a0as leaders of\u00a0our club is immeasurable and while they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have the title\u00a0anymore,\u00a0we know\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0both continue to be incredible leaders\u00a0of\u00a0our club and help set the standard for our group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth Stephen and Josh are very supportive of the change and the opportunity that it presents for Tom, Connor, and Jack which is a great reflection of the people\u00a0they are and\u00a0their desire to help their teammates\u00a0become the best footballers and people they can be.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur leadership for 2026 brings together a strong mix of experience and fresh energy, and we\u2019re excited about where it can take the club in 2026 and beyond.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The GIANTS open their 2026\u00a0AFL campaign in a blockbuster Opening Round clash with\u00a0Hawthorn\u00a0at ENGIE Stadium on\u00a0Saturday, March\u00a07.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The GIANTS have named their leaders for the 2026 AFL season.
