Fresh rule tweaks will be introduced, targeting slow ruck play and reinforcing the limited role of the television match official, as Super Rugby Pacific continues to crusade for less “dead time”.

Five innovations will be trialled when the season begins next weekend, while there will be a tweak to the finals format and the super point to decide tied games will also remain.

Teams will now be permitted to pass the ball back into their own half and kick a 50:22, while no player from the team in possession can join a ruck once the referee calls “use it”.

There will be more lenience given to players keen to tap-and-go and referees will not be obligated to issue a card when they award a penalty try.

The television match official will only interject to alert the referee to serious foul play or a clear infringement that leads to a try.

Their assistance can only otherwise by instigated by the referee.

The variations continue the league’s recent commitment to encourage more ball- in-play time that’s empowered officials to enforce time limits on conversions, penalty kicks, scrums, line-outs and rucks.

Super Rugby Pacific boss Jack Mesley said four minutes of “dead time” had been wiped from games, on average, in the last four years because of the innovations.

“They reflect the ongoing commitment of Super Rugby Pacific to deliver the most entertaining and engaging rugby competition in the world,” he said.

“From the members and fans, to the players and coaches, and the referees themselves, we continue to experience resounding support for the measured steps that we’re taking to refine the game.

“We want to be a competition that encourages quick taps and faster restarts, that cuts down on unnecessary stoppages, and that embraces positive, attacking rugby.”

He said they would continue to advocate that innovations “that are clearly working in Super Rugby Pacific be adopted more widely”.

The six-team finals format will also be tweaked to ensure week-one’s lucky loser does not host a game in week two.

In 2025 the highest-ranked losing team was penalised one seeding, which saw the top-ranked Chiefs defeated in a qualifying final but still host a semi-final a week later.

This year, the highest-ranked losing team will progress as fourth seed, ensuring they play away from home in the semi-finals and the final should they qualify.

Players from all 11 teams will gather in Auckland on Wednesday to launch a season that will include the return of Super Round, to be played at Christchurch’s new 30,000-seat roofed stadium on Anzac weekend in April.
