However, the original location \u2013 an unnamed private road in Gawler Place \u2013 was nixed after building owners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indailysa.com.au\/citymag\/culture\/2024\/11\/20\/the-angels-next-to-be-honoured-with-west-end-laneway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refused<\/a> the installation of a commemorative plaque and public artwork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Angels rose to fame throughout the \u201970s and \u201980s, delivering a uniquely Australian blend of hard rock often labelled \u2018pub rock.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile their 1977 self-titled debut achieved little chart success upon its release, the group\u2019s 1978 album Face to Face saw them impact the Australian top 10, and even hit No. 152 on the Billboard 200 \u2013 albeit under the name Angel City and later, The Angels From Angel City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTheir biggest North American success came about by way of 1980\u2019s Dark Room, which peaked at No. 133 on the same chart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn Australia, it was a different story, however. While 1984\u2019s Two Minute Warning would peak at No. 2 on the local Albums chart, it also spawned the single \u201cUnderground,\u201d which managed to give the group their sole appearance on Billboard\u2019s Mainstream Rock chart when it reached No. 35. The following year, the group\u2019s cover of The Animals\u2019 \u201cWe Gotta Get Out of This Place\u201d would peak at No. 7 in Australia, while they would score their sole chart-topping album in 1990 with Beyond Salvation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Angels would be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1998, and would split just two years later. Reforming in 2008, Neeson would remain as frontman until 2011, eventually being replaced by the Screaming Jets\u2019 Dave Gleeson, who would retire from the role in 2003. Neeson would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/doc-neeson-frontman-with-australias-the-angels-dies-at-67-6106496\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pass away<\/a> in 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/chris-bailey-bass-player-with-aussie-rock-legends-the-angels-dies-at-62-1555958\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one year after<\/a> longtime bassist Chris Bailey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile cited as an influence by the likes of Pearl Jam and Guns N\u2019 Roses, in Australia, The Angels\u2019 legacy is largely tied to the enduring success of their debut single, \u201cAm I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again.\u201d Though initially escaping wider chart success in 1978, a live recording in 1988 saw the track hit No. 11 in Australia \u2013\u00a0 largely thanks to the profane call-and-response chorus added in by local fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a very big deal at the time but it seems to have become a big deal \u2014 that was incredible,\u201d guitarist John Brewster told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-04\/adelaide-lane-named-after-rock-band-the-angels\/105609412\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s just ironic that the response that\u2019s happened, which is exactly in rhythm with my rhythm guitar, it\u2019s Australian humour and I just think it\u2019s fantastic, it\u2019s a larrikin Australian,\u201d he added. \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t happen in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn late July, \u201cAm I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again\u201d was voted in at No. 11 in triple j\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/inxs-top-triple-j-hottest-100-australian-songs-poll-1236031414\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hottest 100 of Australian Songs<\/a> poll.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe track beat out songs by other Adelaide acts such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/t\/cold-chisel\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cold-chisel\" data-tag=\"cold-chisel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cold Chisel<\/a> and Paul Kelly, who have both been honored with laneways in the South Australian capital.
