Australian Jack Doohan has received a Formula 1<\/a> career lifeline just days after missing out on an expected return to racing in Japan.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old formally cut ties with Alpine in January, eight months on from being sidelined just seven races into the season.<\/p>\n

He has now linked up with Haas as the team\u2019s reserve driver alongside Toyota veteran Ryo Hirawaka.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to grow and take on the great challenge of 2026 together,\u201d Doohan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the ideal place to continue my Formula 1 career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Team boss Ayao Komatsu said the Australian\u2019s experience as a reserve with Alpine was another plus.<\/p>\n

Doohan is now in position to step in for a race should Ollie Bearman or Esteban Ocon be ruled out through injury or illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u200cdedication required to remain sharp and prepared to race while getting to know how the team works \u200dand so on, it\u2019s challenging for any driver \u2014 especially one who\u2019s obviously still very keen to race again at this level,\u201d team boss Ayao Komatsu said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve enjoyed getting to know Jack and we\u2019re looking forward to welcoming him into the team and benefiting from his contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether the Australian, who has not run a complete season since 2023, is closer to a full-time seat remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

Ferrari junior Bearman is in line to replace Lewis Hamilton at the Scuderia whenever the seven-time champion decides to step away from F1 \u2014 or Charles Leclerc in the seemingly unlikely event that he leaves.<\/p>\n

Ocon is entering his second year with Haas after joining from Alpine in a move that led to Doohan\u2019s debut.<\/p>\n

Doohan was widely tipped to drive for a Toyota-powered team in Japan\u2019s Super Formula championship this year even after crashing three times at the same corner during a Suzuka test.<\/p>\n

But negotiations broke down, with The Race<\/a> now reporting it was not due to budget concerns but \u201cdisagreements\u201d around engineering decisions.<\/p>\n

The F1 season starts with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in four weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n
