{"id":458942,"date":"2026-02-05T00:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T00:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/458942\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T00:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T00:30:08","slug":"qld-government-releases-brisbane-land-for-housing-with-more-sites-set-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/458942\/","title":{"rendered":"Qld\u00a0Government\u00a0Releases Brisbane Land for Housing,\u00a0With More Sites Set to Come\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The state has set itself the mandate to \u201cuse it or house it\u201d and is inviting developers to register interest in land owned by the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The Queensland government has announced a new program to release underutilised government-owned land to fast-track <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realestate.com.au\/new-homes?sourcePage=rea%3Acontent%3Anew_homes_article&amp;sourceElement=cta_button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">new housing<\/a> across the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Part of the Crisafulli government\u2019s plan to deliver one million new homes by 2044, the Land Activation Program (LAP) allows developers to\u00a0identify\u00a0and register interest in surplus government land suitable for housing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"styles__StyledImage-sc-17n6uwl-1 hlcJVa wp-post-1097187 wp-image-1097193\"  src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; viewBox=&quot;0 0 800 450&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\"  alt=\"\" loading=\"eager\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The new program will release underutilised government land to fast-track housing across the state. Picture: Getty<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The program will be led by Economic Development Queensland (EDQ), which can fast-track the delivery of new homes under the Economic Development Act 2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The\u00a0program\u00a0is also exempt from the Queensland Government Land Transaction Policy, allowing land transfers to occur at residual value.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Queensland deputy premier Jarrod\u00a0Bleijie\u00a0said the initiative was about accelerating supply and removing barriers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cQueensland is now open for\u00a0business\u00a0and we are getting on with the job, cutting red tape, accelerating approvals and bringing development-ready land to market,\u201d Mr\u00a0Bleijie\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Under the program, EDQ can\u00a0also\u00a0accept proposals from industry identifying government-owned sites with potential for housing. EDQ will then investigate the site and provide advice on its suitability within 30 business days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The first site to be released through the program is more than six hectares of vacant land in Banyo, in Brisbane\u2019s north, which could deliver up to 400 new homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">A former Energex depot, this\u00a0site is located 13km from Brisbane\u2019s CBD and within walking distance of a train station,\u00a0shops\u00a0and a range of public amenities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Following the government\u2019s approval of the LAP policy, EDQ formally expressed interest to Energy Queensland, as landowner, seeking a transfer of the land at residual value to enable housing development. Picture: Getty<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The state government has also announced it will introduce a \u201cuse it or house it\u201d policy, requiring surplus state-owned land to be released and developed for housing where it is no longer needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The announcement comes as more Australians are moving to Queensland. In the 12 months to September 2025, Queensland\u2019s regions recorded the largest net gain from inter\u2011regional migration nationally, according to the latest Regional Movers Index.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Queensland Property Council executive director Jess Caire welcomed the move.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cIndustry has long called for a clear and comprehensive audit of underutilised government owned land, because identifying and activating surplus sites is critical to unlocking the new housing supply our state urgently needs,\u201d Ms Caire said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cThis program represents a meaningful commitment to delivering more supply sooner and industry looks forward to working with government to ensure these opportunities translate into tangible more roofs over heads outcomes for Queensland families.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Interested in learning more about buying or building new?
