\n\tChris Hemsworth<\/a> told The Guardian<\/a> in a new interview on his \u201cCrime 101<\/a>\u201d press tour that he had some reservations about going public with the news that he has a genetic predisposition for Alzheimer\u2019s disease, which makes him eight to 10 times more likely to develop the disease. The actor was concerned how such news would impact public perception of his movie career.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wondered if I was letting people too far in,\u201d Hemsworth said. \u201cAre they no longer going to believe in the action star or the\u00a0Marvel\u00a0character? And do I want people to know my fears and insecurities to this level?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHemsworth made the reveal<\/a> in 2022 on an episode of his\u00a0Disney+ series \u201cLimitless,\u201d which featured the Thor<\/a> actor meeting with a doctor who informed him that his genetic makeup includes two copies of the gene APOE4, which studies have linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Hemsworth\u2019s grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s disease. The actor revealed last November<\/a> that his father is currently battling the disease.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to The Guardian<\/a>, Hemsowrth said that his father\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s diagnosis is part of what is prompting a career slowdown at the moment.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy appetite for racing forward has really been reined in,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve become more aware of the fragility of things. You start thinking, \u2018My dad won\u2019t be here for ever.\u2019 And my kids are now 11 and 13. Those nights where they\u2019d fight over sleeping in our bed \u2013 suddenly they\u2019re not happening any more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHis father\u2019s diagnosis has also been impacting his acting choices. He\u2019s taking roles that feel more personal, whereas in the past Hemsworth was making more financial decisions. \u201cI\u2019d think, \u2018I came from nothing. Who am I to turn down that kind of money?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cJustifying things that weren\u2019t the purest creative decision \u2013 but I\u2019ll be able to pay for my parents\u2019 house, or I\u2019ll be able to help out my cousins.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHemsworth\u2019s 2025 documentary \u201cA Road Trip to Remember\u201d centered on his father\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s diagnosis. The actor said the project \u201cwas so deeply personal. It was a love letter to my father. It empowered him for a period, and stimulated memories that were being taken away from him.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Hemsworth revealed his genetic predisposition for Alzheimer\u2019s in 2022, he noted that \u201cit\u2019s not like I\u2019ve been handed my resignation\u201d and \u201cit\u2019s not a pre-deterministic gene, but it is a strong indication. Ten years ago, I think it was more thought of as determinant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to Vanity Fair<\/a> in 2024, Hemsworth called out the press for spinning his reveal into headlines that claimed it was certain he would be diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s in the future.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt really kind of pissed me off because it felt like I had been vulnerable with something personal and shared this,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cNo matter how much I said \u2018This is not a death sentence,\u2019 the story became that I have dementia and I\u2019m reconsidering life and retiring and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHemsworth\u2019s \u201cCrime 101\u201d opens in theaters Feb. 13 from Amazon MGM.
