The debut regular-season NFL match played on Australian shores has been confirmed as a clash between division rivals.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles Rams will face the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground later this year.<\/p>\n

The NFL announced a multi-year deal to play games in Melbourne last year<\/a>, with the Rams designated as the home team for the inaugural match at the MCG.<\/p>\n

Now it has been confirmed that their opponents will be the 49ers, who are rivals in the NFC West division.<\/p>\n

The Rams and 49ers both made the play-offs this season and were both eliminated by the Seattle Seahawks, another NFC West rival.<\/p>\n

“As we make history with the NFL and bring the first regular-season game to Australia, we are pleased to take our annual match-up against our NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers to the MCG,” LA Rams president Kevin Demoff said.<\/p>\n

“Since we first secured marketing rights to the country in 2021 and more recently since the announcement of this game last year, we have seen tremendous excitement for our team from fans both in Australia and also across the world.”<\/p>\n

The NFL has pushed for a greater global presence for many years.<\/p>\n

Mexico hosted the first NFL regular-season match outside the US, when the Arizona Cardinals defeated the 49ers in October 2005.<\/p>\n

Since then, the NFL has played regular-season games in England, Ireland, Germany, Brazil and Spain.<\/p>\n
