Now Anthropic is taking another leap forward, improving its model.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn700043b6p4kzycmzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic\u2019s new Claude Opus 4.6 model, announced Thursday, is designed to make Cowork AI better for office and coding work, potentially raising even more concerns that the AI tool could replace specialized software packages that companies use for those tasks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9n7tk40005356pde1uczuo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Legal and financial analysis software stocks have plunged in recent days, bringing the broader stock market down with them. The Nasdaq just had its worst two-day tumble since April, and it\u2019s down another 0.7% Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9n5q8i0003356pa4ma3uqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many experts wonder whether AI will ultimately cost some workers their jobs. Tech giants like Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are locked in a race to build AI models that they hope will underpin the future workplace.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn800053b6pyth76wz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic rival OpenAI just introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/introducing-openai-frontier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a new platform <\/a>for creating AI agents meant to function like colleagues Thursday morning. And Anthropic launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/claude.com\/blog\/cowork-research-preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cowork tool in January.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn800063b6poefrgemk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It remains uncertain whether AI investments will pay off for businesses adopting the technology.  Anthropic is betting that its new model will help it replicate the massive success of its Claude Code software but for other types of office work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn800073b6pcq0stio5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe think that Opus 4.6 is going to be an inflection point for knowledge work in many ways,\u201d Dianne Penn, head of product management for research, said in an interview with CNN ahead of the announcement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn800093b6pi2fa154h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of those ways involves how Opus 4.6 processes data. Anthropic says it\u2019s expanded Opus\u2019 context window, which is the amount of information a model can remember at once, from 200,000 tokens to one million. Tokens are a unit of measurement referring to how AI models understand text. The longer and more complex a query is, the more tokens it requires.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lw4dn000t3b6p3hhv6w8c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Giving Claude the ability to process more information at once should enable it to handle more complicated tasks, like making sweeping changes to entire code bases, said Penn.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000a3b6p6zheejbu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With Opus 4.6, Claude will also be better at knowing when it should take more time to think through a request \u2013 a technique known as reasoning \u2013 and when it should answer quickly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lr4ou00003b6p52eoo7y7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic also says the new model outperforms OpenAI\u2019s GPT-5.2 model on a benchmark evaluating how AI handles knowledge work in fields like finance and legal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000b3b6p7x0qjjsk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new PowerPoint integration, available in research preview, will let users build slides using Claude, with the AI able to read layouts and fonts to create slides that align with the desired corporate template. This was particularly challenging because unlike Excel, which is primarily data-driven, PowerPoint slides involve making judgements about design elements like colors and text placement, said Penn.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000c3b6pc9vcxvlt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic says files that Claude Opus 4.6 works on, like documents, spreadsheets and slides, will be closer to \u201cproduction-ready\u201d on the first try, meaning they should require less human intervention.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000d3b6p83lz99c1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Anthropic\u2019s Opus 4.6 makes Claude better at non-technical work, the update also includes some improvements for software engineers. Coding duties can be split across teams of agents instead of having one agent work through individual tasks, mimicking the way a human engineering team would operate, Anthropic says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000f3b6pzqfnvg9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The release comes after software stocks cratered this week following the release of plugins for Anthropic\u2019s Cowork tool last Friday. These plugins, which let users tailor Anthropic\u2019s Cowork tool for specific industries like legal, finance, sales and marketing, sparked fears that the tech could replace specialized research and financial analysis software.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000g3b6phyctlc20@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An exchange-traded fund following the software industry had its worst day since April on Tuesday, slumping nearly 6%. Thomson Reuters (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/TRI#:~:text=Thomson%20Reuters%20Corporation,-TRI&amp;text=The%20price%20of%20TRI%20shares,Closed%20at%20%2493.56.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TRI)<\/a> fell by 15.83% on Tuesday, and Legalzoom (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/LZ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LZ<\/a>) fell by nearly 20% that same day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000h3b6pcbw0pvzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the same time, questions and concerns are growing over the role AI will play in the workplace, especially among entry-level tech jobs. Employment for recent graduates in computer science and math has declined by 8% since 2022, according to a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordeconomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/US-Educated-but-unemployed-a-rising-reality-for-college-grads.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Oxford Economics<\/a> last year. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordeconomics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/US-Educated-but-unemployed-a-rising-reality-for-college-grads.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google study<\/a> from September found that 90% of tech workers use AI in their job.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000i3b6pwv2mz41i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those kinds of concerns are \u201csomething that we grapple with and think about with every version of Claude and every product that we deliver,\u201d Penn said, pointing to initiatives like Anthropic\u2019s Economic Index report, which studies AI\u2019s impact on labor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000j3b6pmvtbg6tw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Jacob Bourne, a technology analyst for eMarketer, said it\u2019s unlikely these kinds of AI tools will remake the job market just yet. Security concerns will likely keep many larger companies from using these kinds of tools, since they often require granting access to one\u2019s files and browsing activity. (Penn said Anthropic works with customers to make sure its technology meets their security and IT requirements.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml9lsbn8000k3b6pxw9671gy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPanic over this is probably misplaced,\u201d said Bourne. \u201cBut I think it does mean that legacy enterprise software providers are going to need to continue evolving.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Anthropic\u2019s Cowork AI assistant sent shockwaves through Wall Street this week.
