Payne Haas will reportedly sign a one-year extension when he returns from the Broncos\u2019 World Club Challenge trip abroad.<\/p>\n

However, Brisbane powerbrokers are facing fresh fears \u2014 with Haas reportedly open to joining the 19th NRL franchise and make a move to the Papua New Guinea Chiefs.<\/p>\n

According to Code Sports<\/a>, Broncos bosses will sit down with Haas to finalise his fresh extension, with his new deal keeping him locked in until the end of the 2027 season.<\/p>\n

But from there, PNG\u2019s entry into the competition in 2028 reportedly poses a fresh threat.<\/p>\n

Haas was being heavily courted by rebel rugby competition R360, with a multimillion-dollar code switch floated for arguably the game\u2019s best front rower.<\/p>\n

However, with R360\u2019s start date being delayed until 2028, a poaching raid from the PNG franchise could make attempts to pry Haas away from Red Hill.<\/p>\n

Haas also reportedly has a desire to remain in the NRL, with a code switch to R360 an unlikely proposition.<\/p>\n

Brisbane chairman Karl Morris reportedly hopes to gain a clearer picture on Haas\u2019 plans for his future.<\/p>\n

Claims have also emerged Haas\u2019 management negotiated a 12 month extension to keep his options open, allowing him to command mammoth contracts on the open market.<\/p>\n

The Broncos were open to Haas signing a three-year contract \u2014 which was declined.<\/p>\n

The Chiefs also have a major drawcard in their favour, being able to offer players tax free salaries, while also boasting a clean slate with a $12 million salary cap to spend.<\/p>\n

PNG could table a record contract to secure Haas\u2019 services, potentially netting him $1.5 million per-season.<\/p>\n

Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy admitted the threat of the PNG franchise\u2019s recruitment bids was stronger than that of R360.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u2019re fair dinkum Perth and PNG will be a greater threat than this 360 stuff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge is the salary cap.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, you have a pie that has to be cut up across a really talented group of young men and women and over time we will have to say hard goodbyes to people.<\/p>\n
