Stockholm’s largest hotel<\/a> has unveiled three suites designed by Carl Philip Bernadotte, better known as Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, and Oscar Kylberg, featuring new furniture inspired by the building.<\/p>\n

The Bernadotte & Kylberg<\/a> founders took cues from the angular architecture of the Clarion Hotel Sign when designing the Stratum Suites, which major on reflective surfaces and angular geometries.<\/p>\n

\"StratumStratum Suite 10 balances soft blue-grey tones with pops of yellow<\/p>\n

This 558-room hotel was designed by Swedish architect Gert Wing\u00e5rdh and built in 2008. It has a distinct pointed shape and facades defined by alternating stripes of granite and glass.<\/p>\n

The Stratum Suites are located within the hotel’s pointed ends, giving these rooms a triangular shape.<\/p>\n

“When we first came in and saw the sharp angles of the rooms, we realised this was going to be difficult,” said Bernadotte during a tour of the suites.<\/p>\n

But the pair used the angles to their advantage, turning them into a form language that provided the basis for five pieces of custom-designed furniture.<\/p>\n

“When you look at the shape of the building, the two triangles, that is what made the shape of our chair legs,” said Kylberg. “It set the idea of how we wanted to work.”<\/p>\n

The Stratum Collection includes a desk, chair, coffe table, armchair and sofa, all boasting polished chrome details and diagonal geometries. Other elements include leather upholstery, glass and timber.<\/p>\n

The designers set out to design the suites using only materials and products manufactured in Sweden, in a celebration of the country’s strong manufacturing industry.<\/p>\n

As a nation known for steel production, this led to the idea of lining the walls with steel panels.<\/p>\n

“It reduces the reflection when you use steel instead of glass, so you get a kind of Kodak moment,” Kylberg told Dezeen. “The reflection makes the light softer.”<\/p>\n

“You would think steel is cold, but it actually gives quite a warm feeling,” he said.<\/p>\n

The reflective surfaces are carefully paired with textiles to create a visual balance. Each suite has its own palette, inspired by the rooftop colours visible outside the windows.<\/p>\n

Suite 8 combines shades of chocolate brown with orange and red highlights. Suite 9 is primarily monochrome, occasionally interrupted by soft pinks and greens, while Suite 10 balances soft blue-grey tones with pops of yellow.<\/p>\n

Each suite features a geometric-patterned carpet that recalls the herringbone motif of timber flooring in many of Stockholm’s old apartments.<\/p>\n

The bathrooms are lined with ceramic tiles textured to resemble textiles, reminiscent of a traditional canvas-textile wallpaper.<\/p>\n

“Everything is Stockholm-esque,” Kylberg said.<\/p>\n

The Stratum Suites opened in December 2025 and are marketed as either bedrooms or business suites. The designers hope the balance of materials reinforces this feeling.<\/p>\n

“When you walk in, boom, you get this view, but you also get the cosiness,” added Kylberg. “We wanted it to feel like a space where you can take a formal or informal meeting, rather than a conference suite.”<\/p>\n

Prince Carl Philip is the only son of King Carl XVI Gustaf and is fourth in line to the Swedish throne.<\/p>\n

Since founding the studio<\/a> in 2012, he and Kylberg have slowly expanded from product design into interiors. After designing a room in Sweden’s Icehotel, they also designed three suites for the Eriksberg Hotel and Nature Reserve<\/a> in southern Sweden.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with Dezeen in 2023<\/a>, the duo said that public scrutiny has kept them on their toes.<\/p>\n
