{"id":466660,"date":"2026-02-08T15:31:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T15:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/466660\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T15:31:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T15:31:10","slug":"tropical-cyclone-mitchell-approaches-exmouth-and-western-australias-ningaloo-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/466660\/","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Mitchell approaches Exmouth and Western Australia&#8217;s Ningaloo coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tropical Cyclone Mitchell is bringing destructive wind and heavy rain to one of Australia&#8217;s best-known tourist towns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As of 10pm Sunday (WST) the category 2 cyclone was sitting 45 kilometres northwest of Exmouth, 1250 kilometres north of Perth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Bureau of Meterology&#8217;s (BOM) predicts the potentially destructive system to maintain its strength as it passes the town, before it heads further down the Ningaloo and Gascoyne coastline, towards Carnarvon on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Weather Bureau Forecaster Patch Clapp said &#8220;substantial winds&#8221; up to 155 km\/hr were expected overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They do have that capacity to be destructive and do damage to houses, street signs and trees,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So there could be all sorts of debris out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"trolley in street surrounded by water\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0da7ce8c82073862a267c0bf705c255d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Trees strewn, leaves down and minor flooding in a Dampier backyard as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell passes by the Pilbara coast. (ABC News: Kelsey Reid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Clapp said as the system moved further south, conditions were expected to pick up in Carnarvon late Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Several cyclone emergency warnings are in place for Exmouth and a number of surrounding communities including Ningaloo, Coral Bay and coastal islands, with residents now required to shelter in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Department of Fire and Emergency Services Incident Controller Will Blackshaw said anyone in the emergency warning zone should &#8220;shelter now&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re anticipating they&#8217;re [residents are] going to see the worst effects very soon,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Anyone in the emergency warning area should be sheltering in the strongest part of the house right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shot of grey clouds and rain in the sky above Onslow during the cyclone.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/9ed54fe423d2e74bee041d18f94c5c18.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Conditions began to ease in Onslow as Cyclone Mitchell pushed closer to Exmouth. (ABC Pilbara: Alistair Bates.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An emergency warning for residents living between Onslow and Mardie was downgraded to a watch and act on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said despite the warning being downgraded, people needed to be aware and stay away from any damaged buildings, downed trees and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Locals bunker down<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Exmouth Shire President Matthew Niikula said he could hear &#8220;lots of bangs&#8221; as the wind began to pick up overnight, and tracked towards the coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve had pretty consistent wind and gusts since 1pm today,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There seems to be a pretty howling easterly coming through.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Just before it got dark, I saw a couple of branches snap off and fly in the backyard&#8230; hopefully they&#8217;re blowing away from the house and not towards it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sandbags in front of doors.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/3d63cc1799de0f8076d4b4b6f94625b8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Exmouth residents spent most of the day filling sandbags, securing supplies and making other final preparations. (ABC News: Macey Turner)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">About 30 kilometres away at Yardie Homestead and Caravan Park, Les Graham said while he had experienced a category 4 cyclone before, conditions at the property were &#8220;ramping up&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have lost a few trees and there&#8217;s a few fence panels starting to blow around, and a lot of branches and stuff you can hear hitting the roof,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Graham said while the rain had eased, the wind had not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think it&#8217;ll be a fair few hour to get some sleep&#8230; it&#8217;s just too noisy,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can&#8217;t do much about it, just have to wait it out.&#8221;Time to prepare<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mitchell&#8217;s slow progress down WA&#8217;s Pilbara coast left plenty of time for locals to make last-minute preparations, with many securing last minute supplies and sandbagging their properties throughout the day on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Carnarvon Shire President Eddie Smith said he believed the town, about 900 kilometres north of Perth, was well prepared.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Preparation is the important part&#8230; I&#8217;m quietly confident we should be able to bear whatever comes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man stands in a green shirt and jeans in a mango plantation\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/ea2222130c9bff44ca4337e8246b17bc.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Carnarvon Shire President Eddie Smith said he believed the town was well prepared.
