I really have no idea. I’m just having such a good time playing right now,” he said.

“You make me cry every time. My girlfriend is here. She’s like, you’ve won three times without me here, and she got to see it, and I know everyone at home is watching. Just so awesome.”

The pair were locked at -16 after Matsuyama blew his chance at winning in regulation with a bogey at the 72nd hole.

The 33-year-old was ranked last in the field off the tee in the final round, hitting just three fairways and he eventually paid the price for his waywardness at the last.

The Japanese superstar had hearts in mouths off the 18th tee as his drive headed left towards the water, but he had the distance to carry the hazard and end up in a bunker.

The drama continued as the two-time champion had a good lie in the sand but thinned his shot into the church pew style lip and fell 40 metres short of the green from 112m out.

His ability to get up-and-down had been his saving grace throughout the day, having saved par five times after failing to hit the green in regulation.

But it was not to be this time as Matsuyama’s putt for the win from more than 8 metres slid to the right of the cup after the distraction.

“Was grinding all weekend. Didn’t have my best stuff, but hung in there,” Matsuyama said.

“I wanted to avoid the playoff as much as I could, but I just hit a bad tee shot there in regulation at 18 and Chris made a good putt there in the playoff. So hats off to him.”

A pack that included Scheffler, Akshay Bhatia, Si Woo Kim and Michael Thorbjornsen rounded out the top five.

The latter appeared to be the one most likely to run down Matsuyama after he eagled the par 5 15th to nab the lead.

Thorbjorsen, a 24-year-old American in his second full season on the PGA Tour, faulted when a maiden Tour win was within his reach.

He bogeyed 16 and 17 to drop back to -15.

“I don’t think I failed out there. I’m just learning,” Thorbjornsen said.

“So, yeah, I put myself in that position. I was leading after what, 70 holes, 69 holes, whatever it was. I mean, we’re inching our way closer and closer. It’ll happen at some point.”

Scheffler nails 70+ yard putt for Birdie | 00:53

Meanwhile, world No.1 Scheffler threatened to pull of an extraordinary come from behind victory.

Already a two-time champion at TPC Scottsdale, Scheffler chased a third title with a bogey free seven-under par final round of 64.

The 29-year-old’s effort was matched by Gotterup and beaten for low round of the day honours by China’s Zecheng Dou’s 63, but it was comfortably the most exhilarating round of the day.

Scheffler stormed home with four birdies in his last six holes to reach a total of -15 after starting the day five shots adrift of overnight leader Matsuyama.

That stretch included draining a more than 20 metre birdie putt from off the green on the par 4 14th.

“Yeah, that was nice. More often than not I would probably chip that ball, but the lie was sitting very funny in the grass and my pace on the greens had been really good all week, so just decided to hit the putt, and, yeah, got line right,” Scheffler said.

His monster putt received a mighty ovation from the packed gallery that gathered to cheer on a chase down win, but the four-time major champion simply had too much work to do.

In the end, it was his first round 73, which included a duffed chip that went viral, that was to blame for Scheffler being unable to claim his second trophy of the year.

“How would I assess the tournament? I mean, I played pretty well. Like you said, only one round where I didn’t have my best stuff,” Scheffler said.

“If I get in the house the first day with a couple under par it’s a little different story today.
