{"id":468863,"date":"2026-02-09T17:13:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T17:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/468863\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T17:13:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T17:13:13","slug":"was-north-braces-for-impact-as-tropical-cyclone-mitchell-remains-offshore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/468863\/","title":{"rendered":"WA&#8217;s north braces for impact as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell remains offshore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Residents in Western Australia&#8217;s Gascoyne continue to shelter indoors as Tropical Cyclone Mitchell skirts off the coast of Carnarvon, while others welcome the extra rainfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The category one system has been hugging the Pilbara coastline and travelling south since Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Travelling parallel to shore, TC Mitchell is tracking south of Carnarvon and was expected to make landfall near Shark Bay overnight or early on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecaster Caroline Crowe said rain and winds had started to pick up across the world heritage listed area, located about 800 kilometres north of Perth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Shark Bay area will see the worst conditions over the next three to six hours,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Crowe said the system would <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-05\/meteorologist-explains-tropical-low-cyclone-difference-australia\/106299336\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106299336\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dissipate into a tropical low<\/a>, once it made landfall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-05\/meteorologist-explains-tropical-low-cyclone-difference-australia\/106299336\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What&#8217;s behind a &#8216;perfect storm&#8217;?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tropical lows are weaker than tropical cyclones, but a meteorologist explains they can still cause significant damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As Tropical Cyclone Mitchell continues to move southwards and crosses the coast, it will begin to weaken over land,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We could still see some damaging wind gusts with peak gusts up to 100km\/h.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As the system weakens, BoM have warned of abnormally high tides in the southern parts of Shark Bay, and possible flash flooding in surrounding areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It will bring potentially heavy rainfall that could lead to some flash flooding to parts of the Gascoyne, Central West and in the Central Wheatbelt on Tuesday,&#8221; Ms Crowe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The forecaster said affected areas may include Geraldton, Kalbarri, Merredin, Moora, Mount Magnet and Dalwallinu.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yellow and orange cyclone tracking map showing cyclone path\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/df730a67c002555fcafdedb19c22bb15.png\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tropical Cyclone Mitchell is expected to cross the coast on Monday night or early Tuesday morning. (Supplied: Bureau of Meteorology)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An evacuation centre remains open at the Shark Bay Recreation Centre, while the Carnarvon PCYC is now closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A number of schools will reopen in the Pilbara, however several schools in Shark Bay will be closed to all staff and students on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No major damage<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As of 10pm AWST on Monday, Department of Fire and Emergency Services Incident Controller Will Blackshaw said there were no reports of major damage in Carnarvon or Coral Bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re hoping that in the morning when people get up and have a look around, we won&#8217;t see too much more damage,&#8221; Mr Blackshaw said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But certainly, it&#8217;s looking better than not at the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photo of stormy weather over ocean from point of view of car\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/63a90c186fe421b998c4cf8209246fbc.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">DFES Incident Controller Will Blackshaw said there had been no reports of &#8220;major damage&#8221; as Cyclone Mitchell passed Carnarvon.\u00a0 (Supplied: Sophia Alston)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Blackshaw said the impacts of Cyclone Mitchell were still being felt in Shark Bay, with rainfall totals surpassing 80 millimetres since 9am Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m just getting reports in now of approximately 200mm of rain in Monkey Mia and about 80mm in Denham,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[There was also a] little bit of water ingress into some properties there,<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Blackshaw said emergency crews would continue to monitor any potential damage in Shark Bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We do a lot of preparatory work before these events and that doesn&#8217;t stop,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re still busy making the next plans of how we&#8217;ll get resources into different areas if we need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wild weather<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Carnarvon resident and ABC reporter Rachel Hagan said the weather had been relatively calm until heavy rain and wind began in the early afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Things have started to pick up now \u2014 quite a few bangs outside which have made me jump but probably nothing like we&#8217;re about to experience,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"leaves and flowers on the ground with puddles\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0578cd184238ec779194f28857407ae9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Gascoyne residents have prepared for heaving rain and wind from TC Mitchell.
