Noel Gallagher<\/a>\u00a0has addressed the controversy around his\u00a0BRIT Award<\/a>\u00a0for Songwriter of the Year, calling on critics to \u201cmeet me there\u201d.<\/p>\n

Last week, the\u00a0Oasis<\/a>\u00a0guitarist\u00a0was announced as this year\u2019s recipient of the prize<\/a>, which recognises \u201cexceptional songwriting\u201d and has previously been awarded to the likes of Ed Sheeran<\/a>,\u00a0Kid Harpoon<\/a>,\u00a0RAYE<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Charli XCX<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The BRITs\u00a0organisers\u00a0said they had selected him as he had \u201cpermeated the fabric of British culture for over 30 years\u201d with songs that \u201ccontinue to resonate with audiences around the world like no other\u201d, but some have pointed to the fact that Gallagher has in fact not released any new songs over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n

Now, Noel has addressed the backlash during an appearance on talkSPORT, in which he admitted:\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0written a song for two years.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not sure how\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0got away with that\u00a0one\u00a0but\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

When asked by host Andy Goldstein about those questioning whether he deserves the award, Gallagher said:\u00a0\u201cWell,\u00a0I think the Brits\u00a0is all based on record sales, and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not sure there was another single songwriter that sold\u2026 I mean, we sold a million records last year.\u00a0Didn\u2019t\u00a0even get off the\u00a0couch\u00a0and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not sure\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a songwriter that can match that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you know, if anybody\u2019s got a problem with it, meet me there,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019ll have it out on the red carpet. If any of those wet wipes songwriting teams, all 11 of them, want to write a song between the lot of them, want to have it out on the red carpet, I\u2019m there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BRITs are taking place in Gallagher\u2019s hometown on Manchester on February 28,\u00a0the first time they have been held outside of London in their near-50-year history<\/a>. Noel will be on hand to accept his award, although he said he has not spoken to his brother Liam about whether he will join him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019m being honest right, I just think they were desperate to get somebody from Oasis up there because it\u2019s from Manchester\u2026 that\u2019s what I think,\u201d Noel added.<\/p>\n

Recently,\u00a0Noel\u00a0reflected on Oasis\u2018 historic reunion run and fuelled rumours of new music with the admission that he was \u201cback at work\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n

The band\u2019s 41-date tour\u00a0began in Cardiff on July 4<\/a>\u00a0last year and saw them take in five homecoming shows at Manchester\u2019s Heaton Park, seven at Wembley Stadium in London, and gigs across the UK, Europe, Asia,\u00a0Australia\u00a0and the Americas.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Radio 5\u2019s\u00a0Football Daily\u00a0<\/a>last month, he was asked about his break post-gigs, prompting Noel to reply: \u201cThe holiday was good. But, yeah, back at work on Monday. So it\u2019s all good, mate. It\u2019s all been going great.\u201d As for his busy and successful 2025 with Oasis, he said: \u201cIt went rather well, didn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Rumours\u00a0of more tour dates this year, as well as potential\u00a0new music, have been rife in recent months. Liam\u00a0has teased more shows on X<\/a>,\u00a0writing, \u201cI know things you don\u2019t know\u201d to a fan who asked him if he\u00a0was\u00a0sad the tour would\u00a0be ending\u00a0soon.<\/p>\n

And, at the\u00a0last Wembley show of their comeback run in September<\/a>, he\u00a0told fans \u201cSee you next year\u201d before playfully slapping himself on the wrist<\/a>. Then in\u00a0October, a British peer seemed to\u00a0accidentally reveal that Oasis would be playing Knebworth this summer<\/a> \u2013 in what would mark 30 years since the band\u2019s famous shows at the Hertfordshire stately home \u2013 before backtracking on her claims.<\/p>\n

What has been confirmed, however, is that\u00a0a new film documenting Oasis\u2019 return and comeback tour is also on the way, and is being produced by\u00a0Peaky Blinders\u00a0creator Steven Knight<\/a>.<\/p>\n
