It’s mounted on the first Aston Martin in-house gearbox casing.

Different doesn’t necessarily mean faster — see Mercedes’s first attempt at the 2022 regulations that set the team back years in competitiveness.

But deep down it must have been what every other designer feared: that a cashed-up Aston Martin would unleash the legendary Newey on the new regulations.

3-Peat?! – McLaren unveil 2026 livery | 00:38

WHY ASTON MARTIN IS BETTING BIG ON NEWEY

Newey’s switch from Red Bull Racing to Aston Martin could be epoch-making. History suggests is will be.

The 67-year-old English designer is among the most decorated engineers ever to work in Formula 1, with his chassis responsible for 12 constructors titles and 14 drivers championship.

But it’s not about just the stats. It’s the way they’ve been accumulated.

Every team he joins finds its way to the championship.

It took him just six years out of university to win his first, in the American CART series.

He joined Williams in 1991, and by 1992 the team won the drivers-constructors championship double.

He switched to McLaren in 1997, and the team won both titles in 1998.

Perhaps his highest profile change was to the minnow Red Bull Racing team in 2006. It won its first race in 2009 and the championship double the following season.

He sensationally quit Red Bull Racing in 2004 amid the fallout from the Christian Horner scandal, though his list of grievances reportedly extended beyond just the negative headlines surrounding the boss. Speculation suggested there were attempts to shuffle him sideways and away from the F1 project, and other technical chiefs in the team were being given credit for success he felt was due to him.

There’s no risk of that happening at Aston Martin, where he’s both a shareholding managing technical partner and the team principal.

And his career results suggest there’ll be plenty of success to revel in at Aston Martin.

Cadillac F1 reveal 1st Livery for 2026 | 00:39

FOUR MONTHS ON THE BACK FOOT

The start of the journey hasn’t been auspicious, but it tracks for Newey, whose career is one of pushing the envelope not just in design but in logistics.

Red Bull Racing would often turn up late to testing with one of his cars and regularly go on to win the championship or at least contend for wins.

The 2026 season, though, might be the first instance of a car being delayed at least partly due to his reputation.

“The AMR technology campus is still evolving, the [wind tunnel] wasn’t on song until April, and I only joined the team last March, so we’ve started from behind,” Newey explained in comments made before this morning’s launch. “It’s been a very compressed timescale and an extremely busy 10 months.

“The reality is that we didn’t get a model of the 2026 car into the [wind tunnel] until mid-April, whereas most if not all of our rivals would have had a model in the wind tunnel from the moment the 2026 aero testing ban ended at the beginning of January last year.

“That put us on the back foot by about four months, which has meant a very, very compressed research and design cycle.

“The car only came together at the last minute, which is why we were fighting to make it to the Barcelona shakedown.”

Speaking at the team’s season launch overnight, Newey explained that, despite being on gardening leave between jobs, he spent his time at home working on concepts for the new regulations that would from the AMR26’s underlying philosophy.

“We all knew what the regulations were, they were published, so I just tried to sit back and think, ‘Okay, I’ve got to just think from first principles with these regulations. What could be a possible solution?’,” he said, per Autosport.

“I came up with a philosophy and then when I started at the team on 2 March, kind of discussed that philosophy with the aerodynamicists and designers at Aston Martin. We all agreed that seemed a viable proposal and that’s what we’ve followed ever since.”

Despite the explanation, it’s a nonetheless fascinating revelation given there’s no substitute to hours when developing a Formula 1 car — and when so many of Aston Martin’s rivals last season made a point of saying they began work on their 2026 cars very early last year.

It suggests one of two conclusions: either the original design team was so insufficiently trusted by management that it was told not to work on 2026 until Newey arrived, or he or they or both came to the conclusion that whatever work they had been doing was largely valueless.

Whatever the case, it underlines that this team is now totally centred around Newey being the singular element that could take Aston Martin out of the midfield and into the leading pack.

Mercedes confident in new W17 Challenger | 01:30

‘AGGRESSIVE? POSSIBLY…’

But the delay brings with it challenges ahead of an already challenging proposition for Aston Martin.

The Race has suggested that the car is notably overweight, even accounting for the fact that most teams are expected to start the season above the weight limit.

Though the team completed an eventual 307.4 kilometres in Barcelona, reliability also remains unproven. Even though it made it to Spain for the opening test — unlike, for example, Williams — it still heads to Bahrain testing this week behind the eight ball.

That combines with the fact Honda has heavily hinted that its power unit isn’t as well developed as it had hoped it would be, with bosses at the Japanese marque suggesting the internal combustion engine could be less performant relative to rival manufacturers.

There’s also a question of the team’s readiness to tackle the new rules. That’s not a reflection of the talent at the team but rather the pace of Aston Martin’s internal revolution.

Significant infrastructure upgrades have come online in the last 12 months or so — the wind tunnel is just one element — as the team has expanded for the new rules.

Newey ascended to the team principal role only at the end of last year, displacing former boss Andy Cowell in the role. His arrival also precipitated the demise of former technical director Dan Fallows, a former protégé of his at Red Bull Racing.

Aston Martin’s Managing Technical Partner Adrian Newey ahead of the Formula One British Grand Prix at the Silverstone motor racing circuit in Silverstone, central England, on July 6, 2025. (Photo by Andrej ISAKOVIC / AFP)Source: AFP

Technically there’s significant change too beyond the regulations. Aston Martin has switched from Mercedes to Honda for power unit supply, becoming the Japanese marque’s de facto works team. That change has brought with it a need for the team to make its own gearboxes rather than take a customer supply from Mercedes.

Newey wouldn’t buy into reviews that the car was “aggressive”, saying instead that he believes the team has settled on a design that will maximise its development potential rather than boxing it into what could turn out to be the wrong concept.

“Because of our compressed timescale, we decided on a particular direction, and that’s the one we’ve pursued. Whether that proves to be the right one or not, only time will tell, but you have to choose your path and get on with it.

“The direction we’ve taken could certainly be interpreted as aggressive. It’s got quite a few features that haven’t necessarily been done before. Does that make it aggressive? Possibly. Possibly not.

“The car is tightly packaged. Much more tightly packaged than I believe has been attempted at Aston Martin before.

“This has required a very close working relationship with the mechanical designers to achieve the aerodynamic shapes we wanted. But I have to say that all the mechanical designers here have really embraced that philosophy. It hasn’t made their life easy, quite the opposite, but they’ve really risen to the challenge.

“We’ve attempted to build something that we hope will have quite a lot of development potential.

“What you want to try to avoid is a car that comes out quite optimised within its window but lacks a lot of development potential. We’ve tried to do the opposite, which is why we’ve really focused on the fundamentals, put our effort into those, knowing that some of the appendages — wings, bodywork, things that can be changed in season — will hopefully have development potential.”

The result is a car that turned heads when it wheeled out for its first day of testing in Barcelona.

“Pretty spectacular,” is how George Russell reviewed it, describing it as “probably the most standout in terms of the car design”.

What remains to be seen is how much the car changes — and how much it changes relative to its rivals.

Several teams have already confirmed that the cars that hit the track in Barcelona and even those fielded in Bahrain are effectively launch-spec models — underdeveloped cars build to test reliability and the feasibility of basic aerodynamic concepts. The more advanced aero componentry will come closer to the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Even then, the pace of development this year is expected to be ferocious, with changes coming thick and fast even after Melbourne.

Aston Martin is in that camp — meaning there’s scope for even more innovation before the first race of the year.

“The unique thing this year is that the rate of development is going to be very, very high for everyone because of the new regulations and the complexity of the power units as well,” Fernando Alonso said at the team’s launch, per The Race.

“I’m not really too concerned about Bahrain [testing] or the first couple of races, because the championship and having a good or bad season is going to play a little bit more in the second half of the season than in the first half of the season.

“For us it’s important, finishing Bahrain [testing] with a good understanding of the car and then from that point think more in race seven or 10 or 12 or whatever and have a clear path of development.”

For Newey too, the goal for Aston Martin is closer to the horizon.

“The AMR26 that races in Melbourne is going to be very different to the one people saw at the Barcelona shakedown, and the AMR26 that we finish the season with in Abu Dhabi is going to be very different to the one that we start the season with,” he said.

“It’s very important to keep an open mind.”

To say the maiden appearance of Aston Martin’s first Adrian Newey-designed car was highly anticipated would be
