One expert tells WTOP added protein in drinks and processed foods offers little benefit and can come with health drawbacks.<\/p>\n<p>This page contains a video which is being blocked by your ad blocker.<br \/>In order to view the video you must disable your ad blocker.<\/p>\n<p>America is on a protein kick but how much do you really need?<\/p>\n<p>Stroll down any grocery store aisle and you will see a variety of products boasting extra protein. But do you really need all the added protein now marketed at supermarkets, restaurants and even coffee shops?<\/p>\n<p>Both Starbucks and Dunkin\u2019 offer protein add-ins for certain drinks. Fast-casual restaurants are promoting it too. Chipotle recently introduced \u2018High Protein Menu,\u2019 including a bowl with 81 grams of protein. Subway is selling a low-cost \u201cProtein Pocket\u201d wrap with deli meat.<\/p>\n<p>At the grocery store, shelves are filled with protein pastas, cereals, chips, pancakes, waffles and even Protein Pop-Tarts, which were introduced last fall.<\/p>\n<p>Shari Wohl, a nutritionist who teaches classes at American University, said most people do not need the extra amino acids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost Americans are meeting their dietary requirements for protein,\u201d she said. \u201cProtein deficiency in the U.S. is very, very rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wohl noted that getting protein in processed foods often means taking in additives that do not promote health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo in those Pop-Tarts, you\u2019re getting some protein, but you\u2019re getting a lot of added sugar. You\u2019re getting an enriched white flour,\u201d she told WTOP. \u201cIf that\u2019s a treat, fine, but it\u2019s basically a cookie with some extra protein in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protein is essential. It is one of the three energy-yielding macronutrients along with fats and carbohydrates. It also plays many roles that go beyond energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of our hormones are proteins, enzymes are proteins,\u201d Wohl said. \u201cWhereas carbohydrates are basically just energy producing, we need proteins so that we can do all of the important chemical reactions that our bodies need to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wohl said the recent wave of high-protein labeling is driven more by marketing than science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo often in nutrition science we get these little buzz words happening, and then all of a sudden it gets filtered down, and it kind of blows up and goes crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like other macronutrients, eating protein in excess of your body\u2019s energy needs leads to storing those calories as fat. And for people with kidney issues, higher protein intake can cause additional complications.<\/p>\n<p>The recommended daily protein intake is 10% to 35% of your total calories. Based on a 2,000-calorie diet, that is 50-175 grams per day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/are-you-getting-too-much-protein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wohl suggested getting protein from lean meats like chicken, turkey and fish, and from plant-based sources such as legumes.<\/p>\n<p>While most Americans get plenty of protein, Wohl said many are missing out on another key nutrient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere we are falling short in our dietary recommendations is fiber, and this is so important,\u201d Wohl said. \u201cGreat sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, whole grains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foods such as beans and spinach offer both protein and fiber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"single-page__signature bottom\">Get breaking news and daily headlines delivered to your email inbox by signing up <a href=\"https:\/\/wtop.com\/newsletter-signup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"single-page__signature bottom\">\u00a9 2026 WTOP.
