{"id":46981,"date":"2025-08-06T04:39:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T04:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/46981\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T04:39:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T04:39:10","slug":"concerns-about-sewage-discharge-in-sydneys-drinking-water-catchment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/46981\/","title":{"rendered":"Concerns about sewage discharge in Sydney&#8217;s drinking water catchment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An urban water scientist is raising concerns about the quality of treated effluent discharged at sewage treatment plants (STPs) operating in the catchment that provides Sydney&#8217;s drinking water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">University of Western Sydney Associate Professor Ian Wright said his plea for &#8220;urgent action&#8221; followed a study he did with PhD student Katherine Warrick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Wright said that although Sydney&#8217;s drinking water was safe to drink, some of the pollution he detected was &#8220;close&#8221; to crisis levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We need sewage treatment plants that have the highest possible standard \u2026 and we need to better manage the effluent created by a growing population,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An older man in a striped polo with a worn red hat stands for a photo outside.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0e9b7902c8287424e6a25360f239fd3f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ian Wright is calling on NSW EPA to tighten the allowable nutrient levels discharged at sewage treatment plants. (ABC News: Andrew Whitington)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The study, which was peer-reviewed and published in the Urban Science Journal, involved taking water samples around the Goulburn, Lithgow, Mittagong, Bowral and Moss Vale STP outfalls on four occasions between October 2023 and February 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Effluent discharged from those locations flows into the Warragamba Dam catchment, which, under the management of WaterNSW, supplies 90 per cent of its water to more than 5 million Greater Sydney residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Samples were collected at varying distances from the STP outfalls, depending on accessibility, with downstream sites between 25 metres and 2 kilometres away.<\/p>\n<p>Nutrient levels<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Upstream samples were collected at sites 50m to 750m from the various outfalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The researchers found the concentration of total nitrogen in samples taken upstream of STP outfalls was, on average, 486 micrograms per litre \u2014 almost twice the recommended WaterNSW catchment river benchmark guideline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Downstream from the outfalls, the average was 2,820 micrograms per litre \u2014 about 10 times the guideline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Total phosphorous concentration upstream was, on average, double the guideline at 41 micrograms a litre, while the average reading downstream was 102 micrograms a litre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman testing water by a river.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/42b4c0a13681b8a15df2281ee3d2fb2d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">All STP&#8217;s sampled are managed by local councils and regulated by the NSW EPA. (Supplied: Ian Wright)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Wright said the situation could lead to a series of problems across the catchment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The big one is algae, and blue-green algae blooms in particular \u2026 which can be toxic,&#8221;  he said.Drinking water safe<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A WaterNSW spokesperson said in a statement that it utilised advanced monitoring technology to identify the best quality water in Warragamba to supply to Sydney Water for treatment and distribution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When blue green algae (BGA) does occur, it can be managed using Warragamba&#8217;s multi-level offtake capacity, which can select water from various depths to avoid the BGA.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It said Warragamba &#8220;rarely&#8221; experienced problematic levels of BGA, with the most serious outbreak in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Wright said while Sydney&#8217;s tap water was safe to drink, the catchment should have &#8220;industry-best&#8221; standards.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Waterway with sandy bank and greenery.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/41190e7647eda302cdcab913ddc17c55\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The study was prompted by the discovery of forever chemicals in the liver of a deceased platypus in the Wingecarribee River. (Supplied: Ian Wright)<\/p>\n<p>Licence requirements lax?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Mittagong STP in the Southern Highlands, where the sampling sites were closest to the outfall (50 metres upstream and 25 metres downstream), produced some of the study&#8217;s &#8220;worst&#8221; results, according to Dr Wright.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the total nitrogen levels detected both upstream and downstream from the plant were, on average, about 20 times higher than the catchment guideline.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sewage treatment plant, fence and pipes in foreground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d4cbca58f16183627639369db6ea0626\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Major upgrades were approved for Mittagong Sewage Treatment Plant in May, nearly a decade after it reached its design capacity.\u00a0 (ABC Illawarra: Brooke Chandler)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The NSW EPA regulates discharge into zones where effluent from a pipe or outlet is released into a wider waterway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A statement from the EPA said it considered a &#8220;range of factors, including the environmental values of the receiving waters&#8221;, when setting or reviewing licence limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It said that, in accordance with its licence, the Mittagong STP had not recorded any breaches of its nitrogen discharge limits in the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Wright said the EPA&#8217;s permitted concentrations were not strict enough.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no breaches because the licence has such ridiculously high permitted nutrient concentrations,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Mittagong STP&#8217;s licence allows nitrogen to be released at 10,000 micrograms per litre, which is 40 times higher than the WaterNSW catchment guideline of 250 micrograms per litre.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tree in foreground, sewage treatment plant in background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/259f078d8ab9a637a4ecc7099b83cbe3\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mittagong STP has exceeded its design capacity over the past two years, according to council papers.
