{"id":470973,"date":"2026-02-10T16:52:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T16:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/470973\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T16:52:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T16:52:08","slug":"column-indiana-mens-basketball-did-what-was-needed-in-win-over-oregon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/470973\/","title":{"rendered":"COLUMN: Indiana men\u2019s basketball did what was needed in win over Oregon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As\u00a0the NCAA Tournament\u00a0nears, every game holds weight for Indiana men\u2019s basketball if\u00a0it\u00a0wishes\u00a0to hear\u00a0its\u00a0name called on Selection\u00a0Sunday\u00a0on March 15.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After going on a\u00a0four-game\u00a0losing skid\u00a0in January, the Hoosiers\u2019\u00a0future\u00a0looked\u00a0uncertain, as the losses\u00a0piled up\u00a0and the absence of quality wins was\u00a0apparent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But since that losing streak, the Cream and Crimson\u00a0appeared to\u00a0turn\u00a0a new leaf, winning four of their next five games\u00a0and\u00a0picking up multiple Quadrant 1 victories\u00a0to\u00a0strengthen\u00a0their\u00a0NCAA Tournament\u00a0resume.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of\u00a0their\u00a0matchup with\u00a0a struggling\u00a0Oregon\u00a0team\u00a0that\u00a0sits at the bottom of the conference standings, all the Hoosiers needed to do was come away with a win.\u00a0A\u00a0victory\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0enhance the\u00a0resume,\u00a0while\u00a0a loss could have prevailed as detrimental.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0against the Ducks inside Simon\u00a0Skjodt\u00a0Assembly Hall\u00a0on\u00a0Monday night,\u00a0the Hoosiers\u00a0took care of business and did exactly what it needed to do to come away with\u00a0their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.idsnews.com\/article\/2026\/02\/indiana-mens-basketball-lamar-wilkerson-win-oregon-iu-big-ten\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">92-74 victory over Oregon<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven through that four-game stretch,\u00a0I thought we came\u00a0in every day at practice and continued to really work at what we needed to work on, and it&#8217;s kind of resulting in this run that we been on a little bit so far.\u201d redshirt senior forward Tucker DeVries said postgame.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Against the Ducks, Indiana\u00a0saw\u00a0production from all\u00a0facets\u00a0of the roster, as four of the five players in the starting rotation finished in double-digit scoring. Fifth year senior guard Lamar Wilkerson led the way with 41 points off 13-for-20 shooting from the field and six made shots from beyond the arc.\u00a0While Wilkerson\u2019s performance stood out, his effective shot making created opportunities for his teammates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senior forward Sam\u00a0Alexis was one\u00a0Hoosier\u00a0who\u00a0benefited.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the night, Alexis\u00a0tallied 16 points on a perfect 8-for-8\u00a0shooting\u00a0from the field. The University of Florida\u00a0transfer also\u00a0notched\u00a0five boards and two assists in his 25 minutes on the floor.\u00a0The\u00a016-point\u00a0performance marked his second\u00a0consecutive\u00a0game\u00a0in double figure scoring.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u00a0(Alexis)\u00a0kind of is\u00a0our motor and enthusiasm every day,\u201d Tucker DeVries\u00a0said. \u201cI think that leads to the success\u00a0he&#8217;s\u00a0had as of late, too.\u00a0He&#8217;s\u00a0so versatile\u00a0at\u00a0that position.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0the game, Indiana head coach Darian DeVries said\u00a0Indiana has\u00a0not\u00a0utilized\u00a0Alexis enough and will continue to\u00a0make\u00a0use\u00a0of\u00a0him as the season progresses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to individual performances, the Hoosiers as a\u00a0whole\u00a0played together and efficiently.\u00a0The Cream and Crimson limited turnovers and won the rebounding battle \u2014 two statistics Darian DeVries has emphasized\u00a0all season long.\u00a0Indiana had\u00a0nine\u00a0turnovers and outrebounded Oregon\u00a029-25\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indiana also\u00a0did not let up in the second half. At times this season, the\u00a0Hoosiers\u00a0were\u00a0accustomed\u00a0to crumbling in the second half and letting wins slip away. But\u00a0recently, and against the Ducks, Indiana\u00a0has\u00a0broken\u00a0that habit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Darian DeVries attributed this change to his team finding an \u201cidentity at both ends of the floor.\u201d He\u00a0said\u00a0that at\u00a0other points this season\u00a0they only played 30 minutes of\u00a0a game, instead of sustaining for the full 40\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a problem, you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be that team,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0said\u00a0postgame.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But against Oregon, they\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0\u201cthat team.\u201d\u00a0The Hoosiers played the game efficiently and secured a victory\u00a0they needed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while the win was crucial to Indiana\u2019s NCAA Tournament hopes, the victory carried importance beyond the Hoosiers\u2019 resume.\u00a0The win added to the Cream and Crimson\u2019s momentum, which they will\u00a0likely\u00a0need\u00a0ahead of its upcoming gauntlet stretch of games.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of\u00a0Indiana\u2019s next four games, three are against\u00a0top-15\u00a0opponents. The Hoosiers will\u00a0be tasked with\u00a0facing\u00a0No. 10 Michigan State at home and No. 8 Illinois and No. 13 Purdue on the road.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And with the NCAA Tournament hopes on the line, each game carries weight for the Hoosiers.
