{"id":471952,"date":"2026-02-11T03:11:21","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T03:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/471952\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T03:11:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T03:11:21","slug":"chinas-ai-industry-looks-unstoppable-but-can-it-overtake-the-us-for-tech-supremacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/471952\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s AI industry looks unstoppable, but can it overtake the US for tech supremacy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      Hong Kong<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxh0t001w26nucs3keaw7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When China\u2019s biggest artificial intelligence players gathered for a landmark meeting in Beijing in January, one question was in the spotlight: What are the chances of a Chinese AI firm overtaking US frontrunners in the next three to five years?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00023b6srzkgljhw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The answer from a top AI scientist present at the gathering was surprisingly blunt: \u201cBelow 20 percent,\u201d said Justin Lin, technical lead for Chinese tech giant Alibaba\u2019s Qwen AI models. \u201cAnd I think 20 percent is already very optimistic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00033b6s0jl77p52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The sobering assessment stood in stark contrast to a year of headlines celebrating China\u2019s AI boom.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlg0j9g900013b6pga8amaaf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since little-known startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/27\/tech\/deepseek-ai-explainer\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">DeepSeek shocked the world<\/a> with a powerful AI model it said was built at a fraction of the cost of American equivalents, Chinese companies have topped global downloads for freely-available-to-use models and raised huge sums in market debuts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00043b6sw5yna8xp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet despite the fanfare, some leading Chinese AI developers have warned that China may have fallen further behind in developing frontier models. Experts point to restricted access to advanced chips and limited capital as lingering constraints.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00053b6smar46vno@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lin was not alone. Tang Jie, founder of one of the prominent Chinese AI startups Z.ai, also known as Zhipu, said the performance gap between Chinese and US models \u201cmay be widening.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00063b6sybgg9pww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn some areas we may be doing fairly well, but we also need to acknowledge the challenges and gaps we still face,\u201d he said at the same Beijing meeting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00073b6sft1bnw0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that assessment does not mean China\u2019s AI industry is stagnating.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlg0kxg000033b6ppj6ccha9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n             Constraints in accessing high-performance chips and capital as well as the country\u2019s unique tech ecosystem have fueled a divergent strategy from the US \u2013 making AI models available for public use, or open source.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00083b6snz1xasg8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The strategy, which Beijing and developers see as a way to accelerate progress and compete with US rivals, has helped Chinese companies make notable gains. Companies are aggressively rolling out AI applications based on these models for real world uses. Even American firms like Airbnb have embraced it to power AI customer service.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000b3b6suwwk64gj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An unprecedented wave of Chinese AI listings has also unfolded in Hong Kong. In January, unicorn startups Z.ai and MiniMax, both developers of competitive open models, went public, raising $560 million and $620 million respectively, with their share prices surging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000c3b6s222kczp8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Global tech companies are taking notice. In December, Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/news\/manus-joins-meta-accelerating-ai-innovation-for-businesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> it would acquire Manus, an AI agent firm founded in China and later relocated to Singapore. While the deal has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/fortune\/20260108\/6076e590255b400ca15f10e7912ef08f\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">triggered Beijing\u2019s regulatory review<\/a> process \u2013 raising the possibility it could be unwound, it is a testament to the advances in Chinese AI technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000d3b6s0n4nfi6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            DeepSeek, which emerged as a poster child for China\u2019s AI boom after releasing an open model a year ago that delivered near industry-leading performance with far fewer resources, is also reportedly set to unveil a new model with enhanced coding capabilities later this month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000f3b6sx9qgoxqe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A key driver of China\u2019s AI momentum stems from its aggressive embrace of open models, a shift sparked by DeepSeek\u2019s breakout success. Since then, Chinese AI labs have jumped on the open-model bandwagon, in contrast to their US rivals who have largely eschewed that approach in order to protect their intellectual property.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000h3b6slp278hc6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The turn to open models in China \u201chas dramatically reduced costs for developers and enterprises,\u201d said Poe Zhao, analyst and founder of Hello China Tech, a newsletter focused on the country\u2019s tech industry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8wyeh2000b3b6phpzhojhd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCloud providers like Alibaba use open models to drive cloud adoption, startups use openness to build developer ecosystems quickly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000i3b6s6xf1xikf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The boom of open models in China prompted their global usage to skyrocket from a miniscule 1.2% in late 2024 to as much as nearly 30% last year, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/openrouter.ai\/state-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">late 2025 study<\/a> by OpenRouter, a marketplace for AI models.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000j3b6s0z29pz7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alibaba alone, for example, has released more than 400 open Qwen models, yielding over one billion downloads by earlier this month, according to the company.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2239628142.jpg\" alt=\"Signage atop a building at the Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd. headquarters in Hangzhou, China, on October 9, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2667\" width=\"4000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000k3b6s7iuk1lcy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOpen sourcing has to a certain extent become an industry consensus in China,\u201d said Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at Omdia, a technology research firm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000l3b6suvyi3bs9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The strategy not only reduces costs but also lessens Chinese companies\u2019 exposure to geopolitical risks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000m3b6snn4po363@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf one day the entire company were to be sanctioned (by the US), then at least the products based on its open-sourced models could still be used by others,\u201d Su said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000n3b6szdln1oaf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is also a hard economic reality behind the strategy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000o3b6sdn9ogntz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no other choice. The reason is that Chinese people, like consumers, as well as enterprises, do not pay for software,\u201d said Jenny Xiao, a partner at Leonis Capital, an AI-focused venture capital firm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000p3b6s2mxcuofz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But while Chinese models reign supreme in the open model space, closed models developed by US heavyweights \u2013 including OpenAI\u2019s GPT, Google\u2019s Gemini and Anthropic\u2019s Claude \u2013 continue to dominate overall performance benchmarks. Closed models still account for roughly 70% of total downloads, according to OpenRouter.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Bottlenecks remain<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000r3b6sr2yldriq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The performance gap between Chinese and US models, while not enormous, persists largely due to constraints on computing power and capital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000s3b6s9caek8us@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOpenAI, Anthropic and other American companies are putting massive compute into next-gen research, whereas we are relatively stretched thin,\u201d Alibaba\u2019s Lin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000t3b6sivp9dftm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Washington\u2019s export controls have barred Chinese companies from obtaining cutting-edge chips, such as Nvidia\u2019s Blackwell and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/05\/tech\/vera-rubin-nvidia-ai-ces\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently launched Rubin series<\/a>, as well as the equipment needed to manufacture them. Triolo said this puts Beijing in a difficult bind, as it weighs the near-term need for advanced chips against its push for self-reliance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000w3b6sbvk1rfkj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            DeepSeek, Alibaba, and other Chinese tech giants ByteDance and Tencent have been granted conditional approvals by Beijing to purchase a certain amount of H200s, Reuters reported last month, citing anonymous sources.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000x3b6sqran8ivi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike US startups that can raise multiple rounds of venture capital funding, Chinese AI companies face a thinner investor base and growing pressure to demonstrate commercial viability quickly. That is forcing companies like Z.ai and Minimax into public listings ahead of their American competitors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000y3b6s4p78jfat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA lot of these Chinese companies are trying to get out as soon as possible, because they\u2019re burning a lot of cash and getting into public market is the easiest way to do that,\u201d Xiao of Leonis Capital said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk000z3b6s160cdnnk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adding to the challenge is China\u2019s domestic market, which is smaller and often demands heavy customization, making it harder for AI model developers to turn a profit, she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00113b6s073r8yl2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, experts caution against underestimating China\u2019s long-term prospects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00123b6s05q6k674@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chinese companies have excelled at rapid deployment in consumer-facing applications and integrating AI into industrial use, said Deepika Giri, head of AI research at market research firm IDC.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00133b6sqwj2zj9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even with limitations in China\u2019s AI models, the technology is \u201cbecoming more ubiquitous,\u201d she said. \u201cIt may not be the best (model) available globally, but still they\u2019re integrating, so that the industrialization of AI is progressing extremely rapidly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml8uxptk00143b6stri6kqcv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beijing has also made AI application a focus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nda.gov.cn\/sjj\/zwgk\/tzgg\/0107\/20260107214358696030895_pc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unveiling an action plan<\/a> to deepen the use of AI in manufacturing last month, part of a national strategy to upgrade its industrial sector.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\"
