{"id":472007,"date":"2026-02-11T03:42:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T03:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/472007\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T03:42:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T03:42:08","slug":"sit-down-with-matthew-scarlett","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/472007\/","title":{"rendered":"Sit Down with Matthew Scarlett"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                Interview\n            <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__summary\">\n                Matthew Scarlett sat down with Melbourne Media to reflect on the opportunity to join the Dees.\n            <\/p>\n<p>MELBOURNE\u00a0welcomed three-time premiership defender Matthew Scarlett to the club late last year, with the former Cat embracing the opportunity to return to the AFL system and contribute to Melbourne\u2019s next phase.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"439\" data-end=\"599\">After spending five years away from an AFL club, Scarlett said the move felt like a natural step forward.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"601\" data-end=\"784\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great opportunity to get back into the AFL system,\u201d Scarlett said. \u201cI\u2019m really thrilled to be here at such a great club and enjoying getting my bearings in a new environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"1005\">Scarlett\u2019s decision to join Melbourne was shaped by strong existing relationships within the coaching group, including senior coach Steven King, alongside familiar faces he has worked closely with across recent years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1149\">But what truly appealed to the former champion defender was the club\u2019s emerging talent and the chance to work hands-on with a developing list.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1327\">\u201cI think they\u2019ve got a really exciting group of young players,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a new environment for me, and I\u2019m still learning as well &#8211; that\u2019s something I\u2019ve really enjoyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1329\" data-end=\"1574\">Scarlett\u2019s role sees him working closely with Melbourne\u2019s key position players across both ends of the ground, focusing on contested marking, aerial craft, body positioning and defensive fundamentals, while also contributing to ruck development.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1726\">As he\u2019s spent more time with the group, Scarlett has been impressed by both the depth of talent and the appetite to improve shown by the playing list.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1938\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to single anyone out too much, but some of the young guys really excite me,\u201d he said. \u201cXavier Taylor, who\u2019s just been drafted, is really exciting, and Daniel Turner is someone I didn\u2019t know a whole lot about before arriving &#8211; he\u2019s been really impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted the importance of Melbourne\u2019s experienced players in guiding the next generation, noting their leadership on the training track.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2336\">\u201cThose older guys are great teachers,\u201d Scarlett said. \u201cBrody Mihocek is going to be unbelievable for this footy club &#8211; that\u2019s an unbelievable get. And Tom McDonald brings such a calm, steady influence for the younger defenders coming through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2338\" data-end=\"2498\">Among the developing group, Scarlett praised Jacob van Rooyen\u2019s approach throughout the pre-season, pointing to his curiosity and work ethic as standout traits.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2680\">\u201cHe\u2019s had an unbelievable pre-season,\u201d Scarlett said. \u201cHis appetite to get better really stands out &#8211; he\u2019s always asking questions and looking to improve.
