{"id":472033,"date":"2026-02-11T03:58:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T03:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/472033\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T03:58:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T03:58:11","slug":"western-quoll-joey-born-in-outback-nsw-likely-to-be-first-in-a-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/472033\/","title":{"rendered":"Western quoll joey born in outback NSW likely to be first in a century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When Indigenous trainee zoo keeper Vincent Hamilton bent down to check a trap in the Sturt National Park recently he was on the verge of making an unexpected but very welcome discovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Inside was a baby chuditch, or western quoll, believed to be one of the first born in the wild in New South Wales in more than a century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He was actually in our very last trap and we thought it was a golden bandicoot at the time,&#8221; Mr Hamilton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And then [I] opened the trap and here comes this beautiful, very young boy who hasn&#8217;t been caught or seen before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We measured and weighed him and took samples of his skin and fur for researchers, and then I actually got to release him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man crouching down in red dirt.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/698447685b19b3f03ea96b7417cf638d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Taronga trainee keeper Vincent Hamilton in the Sturt National Park. (Supplied: Taronga Western Plains Zoo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The species was thought to be extinct in NSW until 2024 when an initial 16 Taronga-bred animals were released into the park&#8217;s 100-square-kilometre Wild Training Zone, which is the size of 11,000 football fields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Their survival has not come easily with the quolls navigating life alongside the carefully managed feral predators inside the training zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Feral cat numbers are controlled through shooting and trapping, allowing the native species to learn and adapt to living alongside them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In late 2025 a team of conservationists travelled west to monitor the progress of the program, capturing 57 chuditch and bilbies, including the six newly identified animals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bilby hops along on some straw.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2bc73ce5b469098bbaaa24db995aaa5f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A bilby in the Taronga Sanctuary. (Supplied: Rick Stevens)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Another First Nations trainee, Jarred Clark, was also on hand to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It turned out to be one of the most successful data collections and just proved that the work they are doing out there is actually working,&#8221; Mr Clark said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The survey was part of the Wild Deserts partnership with UNSW Sydney and NSW National Parks.<\/p>\n<p>Surviving and thriving<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bilbies were once found across 70 per cent of mainland Australia but have been reduced to fragmented populations in the Northern Territory, the Great Sandy Desert, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-11-09\/western-quolls-back-in-the-wheatbelt\/104579708\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104579708\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pilbara and Kimberley regions of Western Australia<\/a> and south-western Queensland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since the project started a total of 305 bilbies and 68 chuditch have been released.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Watching the animals reproduce in their natural habitat gave the trainees valuable hands-on experience and insight into conservation work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Seeing the work that is put in behind the scenes, and as a proud Indigenous man being a part of a project like this that means so much to our people, I really love being a part of it,&#8221; Mr Clark said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two men talking to each other holding a bag.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/e9159f0a323615f11b1721114bf94e24.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jarred Clark (front) and Steve Kleinig prepare zoo-bred bilbies for release. (Supplied: Rick Stevens)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Not only are the pair working with animals, they also help with the zoo&#8217;s youth program where children in foster care come to the zoo once a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We teach them things they don&#8217;t get taught \u2014 how to clean up areas, how to do daily chores and also do the fun things like working with the animals, feeding the animals,&#8221; Mr Hamilton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I love being a role model for the kids and giving them something to do, not just sit at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was a foster child, too, so it really helps.
