Institutional team investing has a new entrant: Sports-focused investment firm Sportsology Capital Partners has acquired a minority stake in the Texas Rangers. The deal marks the firm\u2019s first stake in a U.S.-based pro team. Financial terms were not disclosed. SCP was advised by Hogan Lovells and Moelis & Co.<\/p>\n
Led by founding partners John Carroll and Mike Forde, SCP was launched in 2023 alongside Forde\u2019s longtime strategic advisory firm Sportsology Group. Forde was previously director of football operations for Chelsea FC, while Carroll has a finance background with prior roles at Willowridge Partners, Central Park Group and other investment firms. Carroll told SBJ that SCP is most of the way to securing its debut fund, with plans to raise upward of $500M for investments across the biggest U.S. pro leagues. He said the goal is for SCP to be differentiated from the larger institutional team investors, with a focus on securing a smaller number of high-quality team deals; in announcing its Rangers investment, SCP pointed to the team\u2019s \u201cstate-of-the-art ballpark, a top-tier market, and a proven leadership team.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re trying to find a sweet spot of fund size where we can do deals that mean something to teams and owners, but at the same time doesn\u2019t put us into this kind of mega-cap world,\u201d Carroll said. \u201cThat\u2019s not who we\u2019re trying to be. The bet is about positioning the fund around the right subset of assets.\u201d<\/p>\n
SCP was first reported<\/a> to be eyeing a minority stake in the Rangers in 2023 alongside Ares Management, though Carroll clarified that its investment in the team is separate from those initial conversations (Ares is not party to the deal announced this week).
