Queensland-based Gilmour Space Technologies has opened an Adelaide office at Lot Fourteen\u2019s Defence and Space Landing Pad.<\/p>\n

It is the latest win for the startup and scaleup hub\u2019s growing ambitions to be a major Australian space centre, with Gilmour joining more than 20 national and international space and defence companies that have established in South Australia since the Landing Pad was launched in 2018.<\/p>\n

Gilmour Space was founded in 2013 by brothers Adam and James Gilmour who had dreams of building Australia\u2019s first space rockets.<\/p>\n

In July last year, the company was the first to launch an Australian-based orbital launch vehicle from Australian soil at the company\u2019s facility at Bowen in north Queensland.<\/p>\n

The Eris rocket achieved 14 seconds of flight before quickly crashing back down to the ground.<\/a> Despite the setback, Gilmour Space heralded the launch as a \u201csuccess\u201d, \u201cGetting off the pad and into flight is a huge step forward for any new rocket program\u201d, Adam said.<\/p>\n

Most recently, the company cracked the billion-dollar valuation milestone<\/a> after securing $217 million in new funding to expand its launch capabilities, including money from the Australian government\u2019s investment fund.<\/p>\n

Gilmour Space head of mission management Matthew Congedi, who will be the company\u2019s first employee based in Adelaide, said South Australia was a \u201ckey player\u201d in the country\u2019s emerging space and defence sectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis strongly complements the sovereign launch and satellite manufacturing capabilities we are building at Gilmour Space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLot Fourteen brings together the Australian Space Agency, leading universities, emerging space startups and established defence companies.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving a presence at the Defence and Space Landing Pad helps us to collaborate more effectively and stay connected to the ideas, talent and opportunities shaping Australia\u2019s future in space.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is hoped that Gilmour Space would collaborate with other businesses and researchers at Lot Fourteen. The company joins other high-profile defence and space giants, including Kongsberg, Egis and L3 Harris, that have used the Landing Pad to establish a local foothold in South Australia.<\/p>\n

South Australian Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, Defence and Space Industries Assistant Minister Michael Brown said Gilmour Space\u2019s presence at Lot Fourteen would create \u201cnew opportunities for partnerships with local companies, researchers and the Australian Space Agency\u201d.<\/p>\n
