This can be a problem when the donor and recipient are babies, since a critical piece of equipment that does the reanimation is designed for adult-sized hearts. The result: babies are limited to receiving hearts from brain-dead donors whose hearts don\u2019t stop beating while they\u2019re in the donor\u2019s chest. Enter Dr. Joseph Turek, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukehealth.org\/find-doctors-physicians\/joseph-w-turek-md-phd-mba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chief of pediatric cardiac<\/a> surgery at Duke Health. Turek and his colleagues have developed equipment that can reanimate baby-sized hearts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2503487\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expanding<\/a> the donor pool by up to 20%.
