{"id":474868,"date":"2026-02-12T10:24:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T10:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/474868\/"},"modified":"2026-02-12T10:24:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T10:24:09","slug":"barbeques-galore-enters-receivership-as-debt-burns-into-bottom-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/474868\/","title":{"rendered":"Barbeques Galore enters receivership as debt burns into bottom line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Barbeques Galore has plunged into receivership after efforts to find a buyer for the business failed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company was founded by Max Mason in Sydney and the outdoor retailer has been synonymous with the Aussie barbecue since the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Receivers from global advisory firm Ankura were appointed this morning, with <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-12\/asx-markets-business-news-feb12-2026\/106334054?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&amp;utm_content=link&amp;utm_medium=content_shared&amp;utm_source=abc_news_web#live-blog-post-259958\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grant Thornton brought in as voluntary administrator.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The receivers assured customers that in-store and online orders that had been paid for, or part-paid for, would be honoured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Franchises are not expected to be impacted by the appointments and restructuring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, customers can only use their gift cards if they spend twice the card&#8217;s value in cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are 68 company-owned stores and 27 franchise stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Receivership focuses on maximising the returns for the appointer of the receiver, and it allows the company to continue trading,&#8221; Montgomery Investment Management founder and chief investment officer Roger Montgomery said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The primary purpose of the receiver is to recover a specific debt for a secured creditor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Insufficient cash to meet debts<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Liquidity issues have been cited as the primary reason for the collapse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Management was excited to turn around the business and move to the next evolution of the brand,&#8221; CEO David White said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Considerable progress has been made in recent months, leading to significant improvements across the business and operations; however, ongoing liquidity challenges have led to the necessary restructuring of the business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A shop with red signage that says barbeques galore and cars parked out the front.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/e4fb4dfef3a520ca7ae0c39de18ac9df.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Receivers will explore restructure or sale as options for Barbeques Galore. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Montgomery said this meant there was &#8220;an insufficient quantum of cash or receivables and inventory to meet short-term debts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">If the debts are not recovered, the company may opt to move into voluntary administration or liquidation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company is now earmarked for a restructure or sale.<\/p>\n<p>Uncertainty for 500 staff<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Receivers Quentin Olde, Luke Pittorino and Liam Healey of Ankura said Barbeques Galore would continue normal operations under receivership as future options were evaluated, including exploring a potential sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It has left many question marks for nearly 100 Barbeques Galore stores that employ about 500 staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to know where it will end up without seeing the financial position of the company,&#8221; Mr Montgomery said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the make-up of the home improvement and building supplies market had changed considerably in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Bunnings has moved aggressively into supplying barbecue equipment at cheaper prices,&#8221; Mr Montgomery said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s been a fragmentation of the market and an increase in smaller suppliers focusing on high-end products where Barbeques Galore once dominated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The receivers will communicate with key stakeholders, including suppliers, franchisees and landlords, in the coming days regarding arrangements for the receivership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The first creditor meeting will likely be held on February 24.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Barbeques Galore has plunged into receivership after efforts to find a buyer for the business failed.
