They would rather send that forest that we can see to Asia as woodchips,” Mr Bulgarelli said. “We represent such a broad spectrum of the community. We are parents, we are retirees, we are small business owners, we are walkers, mountain bike riders, local business operators. We are not the minority.”

Independent Member for Braddon Craig Garland said logging these coupes would only leave costs and impacts, not benefits to the community. He called on Premier Jeremy Rockliff to acknowledge that the community doesn’t want the area logged, and to “not go there”.

In response, Minister for Business, Industry and Resources Felix Ellis said forestry, mining and public recreation have successfully co‑existed in the Dial Range area since the mid‑1800s. He said only five per cent of the Dial was available for logging as per the 2012 forest agreement. Mr Ellis said the sector is worth around $1.2 billion per year, and “our best‑practice approach to forestry management is the envy of many other jurisdictions around the world”.

Mr Bulgarelli said even though the first road had been laid in the new coupe there was still time to turn the plans around.

elise.kaine@news.com.au

More than 150 community members, from horse riders to BMX riders and young to old, turned out on…

[22
242188,64,63,689,242182,242194,55412,68,242186,242181,75,242192,242193,242178,242190,4270,242185,242184,242179,677,17537,242195,207864,242180,242183,242189,128,2801,242191,242187
0":"post-475177","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-ashley-bulgarelli","9":"tag-au","10":"tag-australia","11":"tag-australia-and-new-zealand","12":"tag-braddon-craig-garland","13":"tag-business-operators","14":"tag-business-owners","15":"tag-climate-change","16":"tag-council-backs-tourism","17":"tag-darren-briggs","18":"tag-environment","19":"tag-forest-agreement","20":"tag-forestry-management","21":"tag-government-abandon","22":"tag-horse-riders","23":"tag-jeremy-rockliff","24":"tag-log-jam","25":"tag-logging-plans","26":"tag-mountain-bike-riders","27":"tag-oceania","28":"tag-penguin","29":"tag-penguin-residents-protest","30":"tag-people-gather","31":"tag-planned-logging","32":"tag-protests-logging","33":"tag-resources-felix-ellis","34":"tag-science","35":"tag-tasmania","36":"tag-time-hiking","37":"tag-west-forests-convener
["GET
