Sydneysiders in the know had two reasons to flock to George Street on Thursday: to be among the first in the country<\/a> to shop Hailey Bieber\u2019s billion-dollar beauty brand<\/a>, Rhode, at Mecca, or lock eyes with Margot Robbie<\/a> and Jacob Elordi<\/a> on the blue carpet as they unleashed \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d<\/a> upon Australian cinemagoers.<\/p>\n

Fans have anticipated both events for months. But only one has united critics and the masses in outrage<\/a> before its actual release \u2013 and of course, it\u2019s the product from the mind of Oscar-winning provocateur Emerald Fennell<\/a>, of Promising Young Woman<\/a> and Saltburn<\/a> notoriety.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suppose you can assume that\u2019s going to happen, particularly when you\u2019re making a bold interpretation like [Fennell\u2019s] version of \u2018Wuthering Heights\u2019 is,\u201d Robbie said at the State Theatre on Thursday night, where she and Elordi \u2013 both Sunshine State natives<\/a> \u2013 had brought the miserable weather from Yorkshire\u2019s moors as a cherry on top of their \u201cmethod\u201d press tour. Hollywood A-listers also joining them on the blue carpet were Hailey Bieber and Australian actress Sarah Snook.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s going to be mixed opinions for sure, but we just weather the storm and wait for people to see the movie, and they can make up their minds for themselves,\u201d Robbie continued.<\/p>\n

Robbie and Elordi\u2019s attempt to make life imitate art across interviews and with, in the case of a $12 million \u201cTaj Mahal\u201d diamond necklace<\/a>, bold sartorial choices<\/a> in Los Angeles, Paris and London has baffled and scandalised netizens since late January.<\/p>\n

Elordi, in true Heathcliff fashion, filled Robbie\u2019s room with roses on Valentine\u2019s Day during filming. Ever the Catherine Earnshaw in real life, as Robbie would have us believe, she did not return the favour (\u201cWhat did I do for you?\u201d she asked Elordi in front of Vogue Australia<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t think you did anything,\u201d he responded).<\/p>\n

After three days on set with Elordi, Robbie told Fandango<\/a>, she felt \u201cquite lost, like a kid without their blanket\u201d when he wasn\u2019t within her sight line. Weeks later, in a move that demonstrated Robbie\u2019s awareness of how much the co-stars\u2019 Tour de Codependency had given social media users a dose of the \u2018ick\u2019<\/a>, she told British Glamour<\/a> it had been \u201ctaken out of context and blown way up.\u201d Ironically, the reception is not unlike what greeted the film\u2019s source material<\/a> in 1847.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it\u2019s not about whether Robbie \u2013 who is married to producer and LuckyChap Entertainment co-founder Tom Ackerley<\/a> \u2013 and Elordi can actually convince the world their twisted mutual devotion exists once the cameras cut.<\/p>\n

The polarising reactions to the press tour, were \u201cnot part of the strategy,\u201d Robbie said. But if the duo\u2019s aggressively pedalled behind-the-scenes chemistry can sustain the \u201cgreatest love story of all time\u201d on screen (however toxic Heathcliff and Cathy\u2019s quasi-incestuous relationship is)<\/a> is a question that can only be answered after buying a ticket at the box office.<\/p>\n

The same could be said for whether Fennell\u2019s adaptation is faithful to Emily Bront\u00eb<\/a>\u2019s debut novel, were it not for the quotation marks hugging the film\u2019s title, hyper-pop star Charli XCX<\/a> anchoring the soundtrack, Cathy\u2019s PVC costumes<\/a> and Elordi\u2019s whitewashed<\/a> Heathcliff casting. And yes, those four qualities are considered red flags for Wuthering Heights purists on social media.<\/p>\n

Online rhetoric, however, is not necessarily a mirror of what\u2019s happening face-to-face. Among the gawping and giggling onlookers held back by concrete barriers was Narelle, an English teacher of 15 years with a particular love of Gothic literature, and her 20-year-old daughter, Allysa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best Romeo and Juliet is Baz Luhrmann\u2019s<\/a>, so this is going to be the best \u2018Wuthering Heights\u2019 because it\u2019s a modern interpretation,\u201d Narelle said, highlighting Fennell\u2019s tendency to cater for the female gaze<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe minute you turn anything into a film, it can\u2019t be a faithful adaptation because we\u2019re not living in Bront\u00eb\u2019s time. We\u2019re living in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Deadline<\/a>, Warner Bros. is eyeing at least $US70 million ($98 million) globally at the box office this opening weekend. Elordi, whose only statement to the crowd inside the premiere was one that sang Robbie\u2019s praises, clearly knows wooing the fans, perhaps more than his co-star, is key to getting them there.<\/p>\n

Leaping behind the press line to speak with a small group of office workers gathered in the building next to Sydney\u2019s State Theatre, he posed for a selfie with 13-year-old superfan Lara. She had come to visit her mother at work, and was leaving with a selfie with one of the biggest stars in the world.<\/p>\n

Starstruck, the schoolgirl summarised her evening in four words: \u201cIt was very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n
