Here&#8217;s what we know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Snowtown serial killings are one of Australia&#8217;s most notorious and horrific crimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In May 1999, police made the chilling discovery of human remains hidden in an old bank vault in the South Australian regional town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The youngest perpetrator James Spyridon Vlassakis was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002, with a non-parole period of 26 years backdated to when he was taken into custody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That term has now expired, and while he has not yet been released into the community, Vlassakis was on Tuesday approved for parole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Here&#8217;s a look at Vlassakis&#8217;s involvement in the crimes, and what will happen now.<\/p>\n<p>Who is James Vlassakis?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vlassakis was the youngest of the four perpetrators involved in the &#8220;bodies-in-the-barrels&#8221; serial killings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Twelve deaths between 1992 and 1999 were linked to the crime, 11 of which were later deemed to have been murders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-01-30\/snowtown-bodies-in-the-barrels-murders-life-sentence\/103382696\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In May 1999, police made a chilling discovery<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In the outer suburbs of Adelaide in the 1990s, unimaginable horrors were taking place. Eleven people died in what were described as the worst serial murders in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vlassakis pleaded guilty to four of the murders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now aged in his mid-40s, Vlassakis was 18 when, in 1998, he took part in the murder of his half-brother Troy Youde \u2014 a crime he committed at the behest of his stepfather and Snowtown ringleader John Bunting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vlassakis later took part in the murders of Fred Brooks, Gary O&#8217;Dwyer and David Johnson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The remains of all four of those victims were found at Snowtown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vlassakis was sentenced in 2002 to life imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 26 years from June 2, 1999, when he was taken into custody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Because he helped convict his three co-accused by giving evidence against them, his image was \u2014 and remains \u2014 suppressed to protect him.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The old bank at the township of Snowtown.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/c5777544d3085095ca4ae655270f001c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The bodies of eight victims were found in barrels in the disused bank at Snowtown. (ABC News: Che Chorley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Tuesday, Parole Board chair Frances Nelson KC said Vlassakis would not be able to change his name, following his release, unless he had the permission from the chief executive of the Department of Correctional Services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I very much doubt he would get that permission,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>How did he become involved in the murders?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vlassakis became involved in the serial killings through Bunting, who lived with him and his mother in Adelaide&#8217;s northern suburbs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Nelson said Bunting had Vlassakis in his &#8220;thrall&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-18\/loved-ones-of-snowtown-victims-speak-out\/103820470\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Friend of Snowtown victim speaks out<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Nicole Zuritta&#8217;s friend was murdered in one of Australia&#8217;s most notorious serial killings, turning her world upside down. (Supplied: Tim Ide)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Unlike Bunting and Wagner, who are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole, Vlassakis was given a non-parole period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If it had not been for your plea of guilty, your extensive cooperation with the police and your undertaking to give evidence for the prosecution in the forthcoming trial, I would have imposed a non-parole period of 42 years,&#8221; Justice Kevin Duggan said in his 2002 sentencing remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am satisfied that you have given extensive assistance to the police in this matter and I take into account your undertaking to give evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Your confinement is likely to be much more restrictive than would otherwise be the case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why has he been granted parole?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Nelson said Vlassakis met the legislative criteria for parole, and was &#8220;genuinely remorseful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have to look at whether or not he presents a risk to the community and in our assessment he does not,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;His institutional behaviour has been excellent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t forget he has done it hard in prison, because he gave evidence against Bunting and Wagner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Snowtown killers John Bunting and Robert Wagner.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/d06f70e77f964ef5ca54ab80c8665a0e\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Snowtown killers John Bunting and Robert Wagner are in prison with no prospect of parole. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p>When will Vlassakis be released?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That is unclear. (ABC News: Lincoln Rothall)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are three authorities with the power to challenge Vlassakis&#8217;s parole: the SA Police Commissioner, the Commissioner for Victims&#8217; Rights and the Attorney-General.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The first has indicated he will consider the matter once he has had a chance to examine the parole board&#8217;s reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I haven&#8217;t seen the basis for the decision of the parole board at this stage \u2026 and we&#8217;ll have a look at how that aligns to any prior advice that we&#8217;ve given to the parole board,&#8221; Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The victims&#8217; commissioner and Attorney-General have not confirmed whether they would seek a review, with both saying there was &#8220;strict confidentiality&#8221; around that process.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-05-20\/can-snowtown-ever-shake-off-its-dark-past\/11082778\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Living in the shadow of one of Australia&#8217;s worst serial killings<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">For many, the word &#8220;Snowtown&#8221; sends shivers down the spine. But as the town attempts to attract tourists, some locals are wondering whether to cash in on the dark past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But former SA Director of Public Prosecutions turned political candidate Stephen Pallaras has poured scorn on the decision to grant parole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m astonished they would even consider parole.
