The new turbo-hybrid V6 engine produces approximately 750 kilowatts close to equally split between the electrical motor and internal combustion.

Fox Sports, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every practice, qualifying session and race in the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship™ LIVE in 4K. New to Kayo? Running the battery flat would essentially leave them with half power.

But the energy-starved engine does little for Verstappen, who slammed the rules as being “anti-racing” and “just not Formula 1”.

“Maybe it’s then better to drive Formula E, because that’s all about energy, efficiency and management” he said.

Verstappen went even further with his criticism when talking to the Dutch media later on Thursday in Bahrain, suggesting that the regulations could force him out of Formula 1.

“We’re still racing in Formula 1 and that’s great, but once you’ve already won and achieved everything, then it’s not really necessary [to stay around] anymore,” he said, per Autosport.

“There are a lot of other nice things you can do, and I’m definitely going to do those — maybe already this year and also in the coming years.

“This certainly doesn’t help to keep going for a very long time.”

Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028, though speculation suggests he could activate an exit clause if he were outside the top two in the drivers championship in the middle of this year.

Though the 28-year-old Dutchman has openly canvassed leaving the sport before getting deep into his 30s, his reference to “this year and also in coming years” regards his dabbling in the GT racing scene and his own GT3 team rather than being an imminent quit threat.

3-Peat?! – McLaren unveil 2026 livery | 00:38

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

Verstappen’s issue with the new rules is the way drivers are incentivised not to push to the limit, even in qualifying trim at certain circuits.

The fastest possible lap of the average Formula 1 circuit will now be the one completed with the highest average charge in the battery. To keep up the charge, drivers are finding they’re lifting and coasting into braking zones at the end of straights and downshifting into lower gears in corners to keep the revs high, as just two examples.

“You are very inefficient on the straights in terms of energy,” Verstappen explained. “On this track [Bahrain] it’s not too bad, but we’re also going to circuits where it will be a real drama.

“That just makes no sense at all. In certain corners and at certain circuits you’re better off going through a corner a bit slower to recover more energy for the straight.

“Sorry, but that belongs in Formula E.”

The car is a double disappointment for the Dutchman, who had first become concerned about the 2026 rules during simulator sessions late last year but had hoped the real thing would be more satisfying.

“The feeling in real life is the same as in the simulator,” he lamented. “Sometimes certain things feel a bit better or worse in the simulator, but this time it was actually the same,” he said.

“Last year at one point I deliberately said that I didn’t want to drive it in the simulator any more. It felt so bad compared to last year, so I thought, ‘You know what, I’ll just focus on last year’s car in the sim and we’ll see about the rest this year’. It’s just not good.”

He said even the widely disliked ground-effect cars of 2022–25 were “still 10 times better than this”.

“I think maybe they [the FIA] didn’t realise how bad it would be, but we’ll see,” he said. “This track isn’t too bad. When you go to Melbourne, that’s where you’ll really see how much you’re having to lift off on a straight.

“Of course there will be a few people who aren’t happy with my comments today, but in the end it doesn’t really matter to me.

“I didn’t make the rules, so they shouldn’t be angry with me for something I didn’t create.”

His comments earnt a rebuke from reigning champion Lando Norris, who said he found the new car “a lot of fun”.

“If he wants to retire, he can retire,” Norris said, per The Race.

While Norris conceded the new cars are a significant departure from their predecessors, he said they would improve quickly as teams better understood them — and that performance was still dependent on the driver.

“I don’t expect Max is going to go out and not give a shit,” he continued. “He’s going to try and win.

“Formula 1 changes all the time. Sometimes it’s a bit better to drive, sometimes it’s not as good to drive.

“But we get paid a stupid amount of money to drive, so you can’t really complain at the end of the day.

“Any driver can go and find something else to do. It’s not like he has to be here or any driver has to be here. It’s a challenge, but it’s a good, fun challenge for the engineers, for the drivers. It’s different.

“You have to drive it in a different way and understand things differently and manage things differently, but I still get to drive cars and travel the world and have a lot of fun. So no, nothing to complain about.”

Norris also noted the sport is only halfway through pre-season testing of the first year of the biggest rule changes in generations. Given the expected pace of development, the cars are likely to be significantly different by the end of the season.

“Comparing to the older cars, it doesn’t feel as pretty and beautiful to drive, but it’s still pretty good,” he said.

“It’s still early days — it’s early days of a regulation that’s meant to be a good amount slower. If we fast-forward to the end of this year and look into next year already, we’re going to be going a lot quicker by then.”

Cadillac F1 reveal 1st Livery for 2026 | 00:39

VERSTAPPEN COULD DOMINATE UNDER THESE RULES

There’s a considerable irony to Verstappen appearing to be the driver who has taken the greatest exception to the new cars — or at least who has been the most willing to go public with their concerns.

The irony is that Red Bull Racing, with its first-ever in-house power unit, has emerged halfway through pre-season testing as the tentative leader.

Not only that, but Verstappen also seems well suited to the new car as well.

The reliability of the first motor to roll out of the Red Bull Powertrains factory turned heads in Barcelona, where it appeared to run without major issue while also looking relatively competitive, albeit during a test that offered no real clues about pure performance.

In Bahrain, however, where the cars are being pushed a little harder in more representative conditions, the car-engine package looks like it’s taken a step forwards, to the head of the pack.

Toto Wolff noted after the first day of testing in the Middle East that “the car, the power unit, are the benchmark at the moment”.

“Look at the energy deployment today,” he said, per Racer. “They are able to deploy far more energy on the straights than everybody else — I mean, speaking of a second per lap over consecutive laps.

“On a single lap we’ve seen it before, but now we’ve seen it on 10 consecutive laps with the same kind of straight-line deployment.”

Whereas most other cars are finding themselves starved of electrical energy down Bahrain’s four straights, the RB21 seemed to have no problems regenerating all the power it needed.

In other words, the Red Bull Powertrains engine seemed to be working most efficiently of all the manufacturers.

Carlos Sainz, whose Williams team takes customer Mercedes engines, came to the same conclusion.

“Whatever Red Bull Ford Powertrains were doing yesterday was a clear step ahead of anyone else,” he said, per Autosport. “Not only a small step but a clear step, and it was mighty impressive.”

Mercedes confident in new W17 Challenger | 01:30

Trackside observes noted that Verstappen was among the first drivers this week to adopt an aggressive downshifting style in an apparent bid to keep engine revs up to charge the battery while braking. By the end of the second day, several other drivers appeared to be experimenting with a similar technique.

This sort of downshifting tends to unsettle the rear of the car as the revs spike, making the car unstable as it slows down.

One of the most formidable tools in Verstappen’s driving arsenal is his ability to marshal a very loose rear axle. It’s that skill that had him obliterate Sergio Pérez, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda as teammates in a line of Red Bull Racing cars that took advantage of his rare talents.

The downshifting style is unlikely to be decisive in energy recovery, but it will be part of the story, and Verstappen is best placed to maximise it.

He’s also regarded among that elite group of drivers who have the spare mental bandwidth while driving to manage the complexities of the energy recovery regime.

Though he may not like the new cars, on paper you could argue they’ll give him an advantage.

Sainz appeared to allude to that potential when explaining that the best car-driver pairing would be the one that required the fewest sacrifices from either side.

“The key to these regulations is not going to be separating both, but integrating both of them together,” he said. “From what I could see yesterday, it seems like Red Bull has done exactly that, without having to give the driver a compromise.

“When the car is telling you to downshift a certain way, you just do what the car is asking you to do. That’s why all drivers, after we will end up doing maybe 300, 400 laps in Bahrain, we try to sort every kind of technique to try and help the driveability and the performance of the car.

“That’s why I’m insisting that the integration of power unit versus gearbox versus driver preferences, it all has to be a closed circle.

“The moment one of the two or three things are not exactly how you want is where you start facing issues, so everyone’s going to need to adapt and find the right way.”

Verstappen may not like his 2026 car, but it could be just what he needs to fight for the world championship.

Max Verstappen might be Formula 1’s most honest driver, though some would undoubtedly prefer if the Dutchman were…

[573
242706,1724,64,63,689,936,937,64331,242693,242707,4971,242710,241752,2055,242703,242704,21779,242711,42135,241742,242713,242701,49589,2057,140190,817,813,816,22496,242695,242698,242712,16215,1737,242709,825,647,234673,677,242697,18923,51043,12022,242691,242702,242696,16217,113203,16193,231324,242694,2072,242705,3595,2020,85,241731,242708,239771,242700,660,242692,12000,2086,242699
post-476714","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-formula-1","tag-apparent-bid","tag-asia","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australia-and-new-zealand","tag-bahrain","tag-barcelona","tag-braking-zones","tag-car-driver-pairing","tag-car-engine-package-looks","tag-carlos-sainz","tag-clear-step","tag-consecutive-laps","tag-constructors-championship","tag-disliked-ground-effect-cars","tag-driver-preferences","tag-drivers-championship","tag-driving-arsenal","tag-elite-group","tag-energy-deployment","tag-energy-recovery","tag-energy-recovery-regime","tag-engine-regulations","tag-europe","tag-exit-clause","tag-f1","tag-formula-1","tag-formula1","tag-four-time-champion","tag-hybrid-element","tag-hybrid-motor","tag-imminent-quit-threat","tag-in-house-power-unit","tag-lando-norris","tag-manage-things","tag-max-verstappen","tag-melbourne","tag-mercedes-confident","tag-oceania","tag-pit-garage","tag-power-unit","tag-pre-season-testing","tag-province-of-barcelona","tag-racing-scene","tag-real-clues","tag-real-drama","tag-real-life","tag-real-thing","tag-regulation-changes","tag-representative-conditions","tag-revs-spike","tag-sergio-perez","tag-simulator-sessions","tag-southern-europe","tag-spain","tag-sports","tag-straight-line-deployment","tag-stupid-amount","tag-team-livery","tag-tentative-leader","tag-victoria","tag-way-drivers","tag-western-asia","tag-world-championship","tag-world-motorsport-governing
["GET
