Kennedy Jr., was sworn in. \u201cThey don\u2019t trust us. They don\u2019t trust anybody, frankly. They\u2019ve gone through hell.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0004356po8landp1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump promised that Kennedy would \u201clead our campaign of historic reforms and restore faith in American health care.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0005356pfobjtw97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A year later, polling shows that RFK Jr.\u2019s tenure atop the US Department of Health and Human Services has had the opposite effect. Trust in government health agencies has plummeted, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-information-trust\/trust-in-cdc-and-views-of-federal-childhood-vaccine-schedule-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to health policy and research group KFF, with declines across the political spectrum. And experts told CNN that they fear things could get worse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0006356pn2ckkhi9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cToday, the federal government\u2019s public health agencies and leaders represent the greatest threat to efforts to prevent measles, whooping cough and other vaccine-preventable diseases,\u201d said Dr. Jason Schwartz, an associate professor at Yale School of Public Health. It\u2019s \u201ca scenario that would have been inconceivable a few years ago.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000d356pgx5o7ogv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon said that trust in public health was damaged by the Biden administration\u2019s \u201cinconsistent guidance and a message to Americans to \u2018trust the experts\u2019 without showing the evidence.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlk2e84r0001356rpx6sz9zb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSecretary Kennedy\u2019s mandate is to restore transparency, scientific rigor, and accountability to restore the trust the Biden administration squandered,\u201d Nixon continued. \u201cSecretary Kennedy is leading the most transparent HHS in history, with unprecedented disclosure and openness aimed at restoring public trust in federal health agencies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0007356pgpjid1vh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kennedy\u2019s strategy has at times involved gutting organizations; after he fired all 17 experts on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s vaccine advisory panel in June, he published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/rfk-jr-hhs-moves-to-restore-public-trust-in-vaccines-45495112?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqfOlbFbLypLjCS3y22tJw3V5OaL5fuT0OBNsIw6CmeQtjrlZTxDrpN6Q8egde8%3D&amp;gaa_ts=698e60da&amp;gaa_sig=L7UkYCxz5BFY4ghoXY6o69sUmZSVXPtQjkJyRRJh_vuDq19c2nsbntpmprg8OsvzVCJw2pmuOONYtNF77XqEtg%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">opinion piece<\/a> in the Wall Street Journal headlined, \u201cHHS Moves to Restore Public Trust in Vaccines.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlk24ir70000356r0kocylxa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And he\u2019s moved to dramatically reshape the makeup of HHS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlk2j1tl000h356rezaz8imq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The day after Kennedy\u2019s swearing-in, Valentine\u2019s Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/14\/politics\/probationary-federal-employees-agencies-firings-doge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands<\/a> of employees were fired from their jobs at the CDC, the US Food and Drug Administration, the US National Institutes of Health and other health agencies, part of a Department of Government Efficiency purge. It would precede an even bigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/01\/health\/staff-cuts-at-federal-health-agencies-have-begun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reorganization<\/a> of HHS just six weeks later that aimed to shrink its ranks by nearly a quarter \u2013 a total of about 20,000 employees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlk2y8w2000v356rabjfaeaa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, public health emergencies were already on his doorstep.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0008356p7tt25m8w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two weeks after Kennedy was sworn in, health officials in Texas announced that a school-age child had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/26\/health\/texas-measles-death\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died<\/a> in the fast-growing measles outbreak centered in the western part of the state. Kennedy, asked about it in a Cabinet meeting later that day, called measles outbreaks \u201cnot unusual.\u201d It was the first death in the US from measles in a decade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0009356panzez3rh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The year that followed would bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/06\/health\/measles-texas-second-child-dies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/06\/health\/measles-death-new-mexico\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more<\/a> deaths from measles, an even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/27\/health\/largest-us-measles-outbreak-south-carolina\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bigger<\/a> outbreak in South Carolina and more simmering in other states. Kennedy\u2019s first year also brought dramatic upheavals of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/27\/health\/covid-vaccine-pregnant-women-children-recommendation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vaccine policy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/09\/health\/rfk-cdc-vaccine-advisers-removed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expert panels<\/a>, the cancellation of <a href=\"https:\/\/grant-witness.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">thousands<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/13\/health\/trump-administration-nih-funding-sanders-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scientific research grants<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/28\/health\/fda-vaccine-peter-marks-resigns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continued<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/23\/health\/public-health-job-cuts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">purge<\/a> of leadership from federal health agencies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000a356p4lnqolfu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI worry that there are entire domains of knowledge that are no longer well-represented at CDC,\u201d said Dr. Caitlin Rivers, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000b356pl7q2wmsc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She pointed out that the agency has been a source of expertise that local health departments count on.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000c356pnzhcksbg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you are facing a case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/18\/health\/pneumonic-plague-bacteria-infection-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pneumonic plague<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/28\/health\/lassa-fever-case-iowa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hemorrhagic fever virus<\/a>, you\u2019re not going to have that in most state or local health departments,\u201d Rivers said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to look to CDC to provide that expertise and support. And a lot of those people aren\u2019t there anymore.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/02-gettyimages-2231836440.jpg\" alt=\"The director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was ousted in August, prompting a handful of other senior leaders to resign.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2399\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000e356posgztk7a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC is also still without a confirmed director; the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/13\/health\/cdc-weldon-nomination-withdrawn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">withdrew<\/a> its nomination for Trump\u2019s first pick, Dr. David Weldon, a former Florida congressman and Kennedy ally, hours before his confirmation hearing in March amid concerns that he wouldn\u2019t win sufficient votes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000f356pj9zo0umc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Weldon subsequently released a lengthy statement in which he attributed the scuttling of his nomination to his past focus on vaccine safety, including the preservative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/25\/health\/thimerosal-controversy-rfk-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thimerosal<\/a>, which was removed from most childhood vaccines decades ago despite no evidence of harm. He also defended Andrew Wakefield, the British physician who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/title-2573118\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made<\/a> debunked claims of a link between the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and autism in 1998.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000g356prhg0ambm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s next pick, Dr. Susan Monarez, was confirmed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/secretary-kennedy-swears-in-susan-monarez-cdc-director.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sworn in<\/a> in July, only to be ousted less than a month later after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/16\/health\/monarez-cdc-senate-testimony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clash<\/a> with Kennedy over what she described as her refusal to sign off on vaccine policy regardless of scientific evidence and to dismiss career vaccine officials without cause. Kennedy later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/04\/health\/video\/rfk-jr-hearing-monarez-digvid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Congress<\/a> that Monarez was lying. Several high-level veteran CDC officials also resigned after Monarez\u2019s departure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000h356pz6kevk74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            All of this happened just weeks after a shooter fired nearly 500 rounds at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, killing a local police officer and leaving windows pockmarked with bullet holes. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/12\/us\/cdc-atlanta-shooting-shots-windows\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> the shooter had expressed discontent with the Covid-19 vaccine in written documents and \u201cwanted to make the public aware of his public distrust.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03-gettyimages-2228382382.jpg\" alt=\"A local law enforcement officer was killed in the August shooting at CDC headquarters in Atlanta.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"1428\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/04-gettyimages-2228550621.jpg\" alt=\"A shooter fired hundreds of rounds at CDC headquarters.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"1428\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000i356p7thaicpg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/20\/health\/rfk-congress-misinformation-letter-cdc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a> after the shooting, hundreds of current and former HHS employees implored Kennedy to \u201cstop spreading inaccurate health information,\u201d noting that the attack at CDC \u201cwas not random.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000j356piokl2a40@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response, a statement from the department said that Kennedy was \u201cstanding firmly with CDC employees\u201d and that \u201cfor the first time in its 70-year history, the mission of HHS is truly resonating with the American people.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000k356phdlsn4yu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Polling suggests that\u2019s not the case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000l356p4vm79erq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In April 2025, trust in the CDC as a source of reliable health information stood at 59%, according to KFF. There was a large divide between political parties: 70% for Democrats and 51% for Republicans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000m356pbqd51bk0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, overall trust in the CDC has fallen to 47%, according to KFF poll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/public-opinion\/kff-polling-on-health-information-and-trust\/?entry=trusted-sources-of-health-information-who-parents-trust-for-childhood-vaccine-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">results<\/a> released last week. Trust was down 15 percentage points to 55% among Democrats and down 8 percentage points to 43% among Republicans, although that\u2019s a slight rebound from a low in September.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljsls1j001p356pri0m92mu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trust in Kennedy himself as a source of health information was also low, with 37% of those polled in January saying they trust him a great deal or a fair amount. Only Trump scored lower, at 30%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000n356p90o12jne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The poll was conducted weeks after HHS announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/05\/health\/childhood-vaccine-schedule-overhaul\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overhaul<\/a> of the US vaccine schedule for children to align it more closely with other countries\u2019, and in particular, Denmark\u2019s \u2013 a country with a population of about 6 million and free universal health care. \u201cincreasing transparency and ensuring scientific integrity across all health agencies\u201d; and the overhaul of the CDC\u2019s childhood immunization recommendations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf000z356pdicyxvxz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou\u2019re a popular guy at Heritage, Mr. Secretary,\u201d Roberts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlk2mp7l000k356rsquu47fp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nixon, the HHS spokesperson, said the agency \u201cis exercising its full authority to deliver results for the American people,\u201d citing removal of the \u201cblack box\u201d warning from hormones used to treat menopause symptoms, efforts to lower drug prices and streamline prior authorization, and increased scrutiny of organ transplants, among other efforts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlk2xg6t000r356ruebf7qhs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The White House is leaning into issues like Trump\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/title-2573118\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most favored nation<\/a>\u201d deals that aim to lower drug prices, as well as its focus on healthier eating, as the midterms approach.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlk31g17000x356rmmlm59xa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/12\/politics\/kennedy-hhs-change-control-vaccine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">personnel moves<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/secretary-kennedy-enhances-management-team-accelerate-president-trumps-priorities-maha-agenda.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> Thursday that restructure Kennedy\u2019s senior-most ranks, enabling the White House to exercise tighter control over key areas of HHS, an administration official told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0010356pncm1f0bz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And though nutrition and drug pricing are broadly more popular issues, outside health experts said that even moves in those areas can\u2019t compete in impact with the damage done in the past year to public health systems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0011356pxoi4mm28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEverything else pales in significance,\u201d said Dr. Marion Nestle, an emerita professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0012356pazetzieh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nestle had initially expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/30\/health\/rfk-jr-health-policy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">optimism<\/a> about some of Kennedy\u2019s food policy goals as he laid them out before the presidential election. And she noted a few accomplishments: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/04\/business\/maha-rfk-food-artificial-colors\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promise<\/a> from food companies to remove artificial dyes by the end of 2027, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/hhs-fda-and-usda-address-health-risks-ultra-processed-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">definition<\/a> of ultraprocessed foods being worked on at the FDA, and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/11\/health\/gras-reform-kennedy-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reforming<\/a> the procedure for chemicals to be considered GRAS, or Generally Recognized as Safe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0013356pw2gb499p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But she wished more progress had been made there, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0014356p0q1ajper@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOne big disappointment is the lack of progress on removing industrial and agricultural chemicals from the food supply, as promised,\u201d Nestle said. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/03\/politics\/maha-midterms-rfk-tony-lyons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAHA<\/a>,\u201d Kennedy\u2019s Make America Healthy Again movement, \u201chas so much momentum behind it; it\u2019s a shame more couldn\u2019t be accomplished.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0015356pi73cdooz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last month\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/07\/health\/dietary-guidelines-rfk-maha\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a> of the new US Dietary Guidelines did garner support from groups including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/press-center\/ama-press-releases\/ama-applauds-dietary-guidelines-announces-commitments-nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Medical Association<\/a>, particularly for spotlighting concerns about highly processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0016356prl1pbvd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Dr. Jerold Mande, an adjunct professor of nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health who worked in food policy under Presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/30\/health\/snap-restrictions-begin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">efforts<\/a> to improve diet quality through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits as potentially particularly impactful.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0017356p30xpchbz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But he gives HHS an F grade when it comes to investing in nutrition research, which he argues has been historically significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/report.nih.gov\/funding\/categorical-spending#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">underfunded<\/a> by the NIH and hasn\u2019t improved under Kennedy. Moreover, he said, the administration\u2019s messaging even on popular issues is unlikely to fulfill its promise to restore trust.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf0018356phnu70gv5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last month, Kennedy posted a clip to his social media feeds of a version of a \u201cSouth Park\u201d episode from 2014. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/southpark.cc.com\/video-clips\/qcl2i8\/south-park-flip-the-pyramid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">original<\/a>, the joke is that the food pyramid has been upside-down the whole time; flipping it put butter, meat and dairy in the biggest places at the top.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/06-gettyimages-2254661458.jpg\" alt=\"HHS Secretary Robert F. When it flips, it reveals HHS\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/realfood.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">version<\/a>, which does indeed feature steak and cheese at the top.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf001b356pkqrnr9ov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And though it\u2019s funny, Mande said, \u201cIt\u2019s kind of this scene where what was right was wrong, what was wrong was right \u2013 this whole thing that somehow we\u2019ve been all told the wrong things all along.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmljqu4gf001c356pev0diskm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s a common theme in messaging from Kennedy and his health officials.
