(ABC News: Yumi Asada, file)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While only 101,000 Australians <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-01-16\/australia-and-japan-reverse-tourism-relationship\/9332518\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/9332518\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">travelled to Japan during<\/a> the whole of 1997, more than 121,000 Australians visited in the month of December 2025 alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Japan National Tourism Organization reported a record 1 million Australian visitors last calendar year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">IBISWorld market analyst Michael Doyle said it was likely travel was having &#8220;quite a big impact&#8221; on consumer preferences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has coincided with these two Japanese giants pretty much taking over our beer industry,&#8221;  he said.Kirin and Asahi buy up Australian beer<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Japanese young people aren&#8217;t drinking beer like their parents did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A survey by restaurant information site Gurunavi last year found that 42 per cent of Japanese people over 60 said they liked beer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But only around one in 10 aged 20 to 29 reported to enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Plastic crates containing Kirin brand beer bottles are seen at its brewery in Yokohama\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2cd4b7859a596a255381516ca61a1c1c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Japanese beverage manufacturer Kirin owns Lion, which produces many of Australia&#8217;s most popular beers. (Reuters: Issei Kato, file)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As drinking habits change in Japan, beverage giants Kirin and Asahi have looked elsewhere for growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">By some estimates, the two companies now account for up to 85 per cent of all beer produced in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Asahi <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-12-12\/accc-raises-concerns-on-asahi-cub-takeover\/11791962\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/11791962\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defied concerns over decreased competition<\/a> and completed its takeover of Carlton &amp; United Breweries in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company told the ABC it employs almost 4,000 Australians across 17 manufacturing sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kirin had entered the Australian beer market earlier, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2009-04-27\/xxxx-tooheys-brewer-agrees-to-japanese-takeover\/1663732\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/1663732\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">purchasing Lion Nathan in 2009<\/a>, which it rebranded as Lion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Lion is always looking to offer consumers new products that are relevant for our market, whether through our own innovation or borrowing from international markets,&#8221; a company spokesperson told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the same time, travel by Australians to Japan has surged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This sustained outbound travel boom is now translating into stronger domestic demand,&#8221; said Andrew Gerrard, a senior consultant on liquor and tobacco at market research firm Circana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Consumers were looking to &#8220;recreate those overseas experiences at home&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Lion spokesperson said the Japanese beer segment was &#8220;now the #1 country of origin beer segment in Australia, in terms of both value and volume, overtaking Mexico&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Truman Ng has seen these trends play out at his boutique bottle shop, Sessions at Arden, in Melbourne&#8217;s inner north.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They stock between 200 and 300 different beers at any given time, with around 15 per cent coming from Japan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in an apron leans over the counter of a bar\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/15f509899c7cffddfbab18bfafac527e.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Truman Ng says many consumers are moving away from heavy, craft-style beers towards easy drinking lagers. (Reuters: Tim Wimborne, file)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Ng said many Australian drinkers were &#8220;getting sick of the super heavy, craft style IPAs&#8221; that had dominated trends in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They were now seeking the &#8220;crisper, lighter, more refreshing&#8221; taste of Japanese beer, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An Asahi spokesperson said their range was expanding as Australian consumers grew more familiar, including a lemon yuzu variety that was &#8220;enormously popular in Japan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Its also launched new mid-strength and zero alcohol varieties &#8220;as Australian drinkers increasingly embrace moderation&#8221;, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Is &#8216;Japanese beer&#8217; actually Japanese beer?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the aisles of your local, not all Japanese beers are equal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While some are brewed in Japan and shipped to Australia, many well-known brands such as Asahi Super Dry, Kirin Ichiban and Sapporo are manufactured Down Under.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Ng said discerning drinkers can tell the difference \u2014 and not just because imported beers tend to be more expensive and have a much shorter shelf life.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Deep fried skewers, green soybeans and a glass of beer at a restaurant in Japan\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/e33fe95eb0facca487f3f7fdb1573daf.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australian appreciation of Japanese dining culture and beer has grown.
