{"id":478335,"date":"2026-02-13T23:45:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T23:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/478335\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T23:45:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T23:45:11","slug":"traders-excited-for-the-future-after-lengthy-jetty-road-disruptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/478335\/","title":{"rendered":"Traders &#8216;excited for the future&#8217; after lengthy Jetty Road disruptions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After a trifecta of issues for traders on one of Adelaide&#8217;s most popular beachside dining and retail strips, some now feel there are &#8220;exciting things to come&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The trams have reopened <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-04\/glenelg-tram-line-closed-for-six-months-for-overpass-work\/105605248\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after a six-month closure<\/a>, the algal bloom has <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-01\/yorke-peninsula-algal-bloom\/106277644\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106277644\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">largely disappeared from the state&#8217;s metropolitan coast<\/a>, and major construction works on Jetty Road reached a major milestone <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-22\/glenelg-jetty-road-reopens-for-summer\/106166802\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with the road reopening to traffic just before Christmas.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While there is still some paving and footpath works to be undertaken \u2014 with the entire $40 million project due to be completed by August \u2014 Jetty Road visitor Sam Andonis said it was &#8220;nice to see so much progress with the construction&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the last time he was on Jetty Road it was &#8220;a lot more difficult to actually get around&#8221; due to the construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They&#8217;ve done a really good job with the footpaths and the road now, having the tram open gives them a bit of confidence in business down here doing better,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman and a girl walk on a paved footpath\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/569f0c3504deb6c37b61172fb2ea0fde.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Visitors to Jetty Road in early January after upgrade works. (ABC News: Daniel Taylor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Local Annette Butler said the precinct was &#8220;so much better&#8221; now that the trams had returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And it&#8217;ll be great when it&#8217;s all finished,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But we need more shops to open up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hopeful signs<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Traders along the beachside retail and dining have struggled in recent months when tramline works, the algal bloom and the cost of living reduced visitor numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Matthew Blyth opened a bar in the Jetty Road precinct in mid-January 2025 and has also lived in the area all his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said while car parking and construction dirt outside were the &#8220;worst of it&#8221;, for the most part his business &#8220;didn&#8217;t feel the effects&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with brown hair and a moustache wearing a brown shirt in a dark room with alcohol bottles behind\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/27e79709922a476b2cb68d2114a93fd6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Glenelg local and bar owner Matthew Blyth says he is &#8220;really excited for the future&#8221;. (ABC News: Stephen Opie)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Mr Matheson said there were positive signs, with &#8220;more of an influx of foot traffic&#8221; since the trams had returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Once the roadworks are finished with, I think a lot more people [will] start coming down to this destination again,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After 34 years of providing <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-25\/jetty-rd-businesses-hit-hard-by-roadworks\/105931216\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105931216\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexican food in Glenelg, Montezumas will shut down<\/a> at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Owner Julie Baker said while the action outside was &#8220;not the only reason&#8221; for the closure \u2014 noting the cost-of-living crisis \u2014 it was a deciding factor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was the last straw for my business,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In October, the Holdfast Bay Council said recent data had shown overall &#8220;economic activity in Glenelg remains strong&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But economic analysis recently published on the council&#8217;s website shows a drop-off in spending along Jetty Road in the months since that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The council said it had commissioned the &#8220;specialised quarterly precinct reporting&#8221; to get a more detailed picture of economic turnover along the popular strip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The data indicates the total local spend in each of the last three months of 2025 was down compared to the corresponding month the previous year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A blonde woman wearing a white sleeveless top standing on lawn near the beach with a love-heart sculpture\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/e67b46ca7c6e260350e22c914a8ce82a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson says &#8220;a great series of events&#8221; are coming up to end the summer.
