MILAN — Kevin Fiala<\/a> was taken from the ice on a stretcher late in the third period for Team Switzerland in a 5-1 loss to Team Canada in a Group A game at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 at Santagiulia Arena on Friday.<\/p>\n

The forward was hit into the side boards by Canada forward Tom Wilson<\/a>, who then fell on his left leg at 17:10. Fiala, who was lying on his stomach on the ice, was able to get up onto his elbows but did not move his lower body. He was then transported to the hospital.<\/p>\n

“Obviously, it doesn\u2019t look very good,” Switzerland coach Patrick Fischer said. “Tough, tough, tough moment for Kevin and the whole team, obviously.”<\/p>\n

Wilson described the sequence as a routine play that happens all the time in the NHL.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just unlucky,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s a competitor, obviously, and at this point, it\u2019s the Olympic Games, and I feel terrible that he may not be able to keep playing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sending his family and him my best. You never want to see a guy go down in a tournament like this. It [stinks] for their country, for their team, and just wishing him a quick recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Switzerland forward Nico Hischier<\/a> said it was clear to him that Wilson did not intend to injure Fiala.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seemed like an innocuous play,\u201d Hischier said. \u201cI don\u2019t see any intention at all. It\u2019s an unfortunate play and things like that happen. You get tangled up there and fell and twisted his leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou saw [Canada] was all out there and they stick-tapped as well. Nobody likes to see that. I think both sides are wishing him the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Especially Canada defenseman Drew Doughty<\/a>, who is teammates with Fiala on the Los Angeles Kings.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully he\u2019s going to be fine quick,\u201d Doughty said. \u201cWe need that guy on my team back home, big time. I\u2019m going to go find him now and see how he\u2019s doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fiala had an assist in a 4-0 win against Team France on Thursday. Switzerland (1-0-1-0) next plays Czechia (1-0-1-0) on Sunday, with the winner finishing second in Group A.<\/p>\n

Fiala, 29, has 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) in 56 games this season for the Kings, who entered the Olympic break three points behind the Anaheim Ducks for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obviously emotional when you see a teammate go down like that,\u201d Switzerland captain Roman Josi<\/a> said. \u201cHe\u2019s such a huge player for us, such a great player and great person.
