(Supplied: Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales)<\/p>\n<p>Sydney&#8217;s coal mining history<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Located near Birchgrove Public School, Balmain Colliery was established after a seam of good coal was found via bores at Cremorne and Balmain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, lower north shore residents were incensed at the idea of a coal mine in leafy Cremorne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The north shore was already quite populated with artists and people as such. (Supplied: Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It produced coal in periods between 1897 and 1931, and natural gases around 1937 to 1950, though not without deadly incidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 1900, six men were being lowered into a mine shaft over 500 metres deep via a bucket when it caught on a projection and tipped, causing five of the men to fall to their deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The men who died were aged in the range between 19 to 35.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The workers would just sit on the edge of the big bucket as it was going down into the shaft \u2014 they didn&#8217;t have any harnesses or a safety cage. (ABC News: Simon Amery)<\/p>\n<p>Living above a former coal mine<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For Mr MacAuslan, who emigrated from Scotland to Australia decades ago, he was drawn to Balmain and its surrounding suburbs for the pubs and heritage buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He would eventually live very, very close to the former Balmain Colliery. (ABC News: Simon Amery)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">By the 1950s, Balmain Colliery&#8217;s two main mine shafts were filled in and sealed.
