(ABC Pilbara: Alistair Bates)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Billionaire Andrew Forrest&#8217;s mining giant is the second of the region&#8217;s major companies, and among its largest carbon emitters, to test the technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">BHP began its own Pilbara trials of battery-electric trains in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ll test them with our conventional fleet and we want to understand exactly [their] performance \u2026 then we&#8217;ll pull the trigger on a fully decarbonised solution for rail,&#8221; said Fortescue chief executive Dino Otranto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Rarely caught short <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-15\/andrew-twiggy-forrest-backing-renewable-energy-in-queensland\/105957172\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105957172\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on spectacle,<\/a> the first of the blue-and-white locomotives pulled into Port Hedland&#8217;s Thomas Rail Yard to rock band Wolfmother&#8217;s 2005 hit, Joker &amp; the Thief.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Fortescue CEO Dino Otranto holds his arms out wide from the window of the locomotive's cab.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/7a6ab6fc00a99c68af499001716b3bc4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The locomotive&#8217;s battery is the equivalent of &#8220;200 to 300 average electric vehicles&#8221; and capable of powering a refrigerator for 30 years, according to Mr Otranto. (ABC Pilbara: Alistair Bates)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The locomotives, purpose-built by Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail, boast what Fortescue has called the world&#8217;s largest land-mobile battery, with a capacity of 14.5 megawatt-hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The pair will save the company 1 million litres of diesel each year, still just a fraction of the 80 million litres the company consumes annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is a large undertaking: these take probably a couple of years to manufacture, so once we pull an order, you can see it will take a couple of years to transition the entire fleet,&#8221; Mr Otranto said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company hopes to complete the transition ahead of its &#8220;real-zero&#8221; deadline of 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Fortescue back on track<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The locomotives&#8217; massive battery will be charged in two ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The first is via Fortescue&#8217;s <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-24\/fortescue-begins-construction-on-pilbaras-first-wind-farm\/106245178\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106245178\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing renewable energy apparatus<\/a>, which it says it is expanding aggressively at a rate of more than 3,000 solar panels a day.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The front of a blue and white locomotive.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bb5fa81d108232fec71aee6cd86f311c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Fortescue plans to totally electrify its transport network over the next &#8220;couple of years&#8221;. (Supplied: Fortescue)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Newman said Fortescue was not without criticism, accusing the company of neglecting &#8220;straightforward, practical solutions&#8221; for &#8220;wasteful&#8221; projects it had since abandoned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company has walked away from a host of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-04\/hydrogen-australia-energy-jobs-environment-climate\/105677690\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105677690\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">green hydrogen projects<\/a> in recent years, including a multi-billion-dollar hydrogen electrolyser plant <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-02-28\/andrew-forrest-begins-work-on-green-hydrogen-hub-in-gladstone\/100865988\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100865988\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">once spruiked<\/a> to be a global pioneer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Otranto defended Fortescue&#8217;s record with the new locomotive looming behind him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have not slowed down with hydrogen whatsoever.
