Success breeds complacency, and complacency is the silent killer of champions. Yet, the Melbourne Storm remain the game’s great survivors. While rival clubs ride the roller coaster of ‘rebuilding phases,’ the Storm didn’t just climb the mountain—they built a permanent residence at the summit.

Watch the 2026 NRL Pre-season series plus the All-Star matches LIVE and ad-break free during play on FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? But the real genius of Bellamy is his refusal to get bored with the basics.

It’s like shaving. We all start with the best intentions—taking our time, checking every angle for a smooth finish. But over time, the routine becomes a chore. We get lazy. We start missing those little tufts of hair around the jawline because “good enough” becomes the new standard.

Bellamy doesn’t do “good enough.” He’s been looking in that mirror for over two decades and he hasn’t missed a spot yet. When the leader never tires of the fundamentals, the players don’t either. It is the ultimate “monkey see, monkey do” culture. Much like the legendary Vince Lombardi, who famously started every season by holding a leather ball in front of seasoned veterans and saying, “Gentlemen, this is a football,” Bellamy ensures the Storm never outgrow the core skills of winning.

Get all the latest news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports NRL Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

Bellamy extends with Storm until 2028 | 00:37

INNOVATION AS A WEAPON

While the rest of the league spent a decade complaining about the ‘Melbourne Wrestle,’ the Storm were already moving toward the next evolution. They don’t just win by slowing you down; they win by out-thinking you.

While most coaches preach a conservative ‘safety first’ mentality inside their own 40-metre line, Melbourne plays with a daring attacking flair. Jahrome Hughes is the master of this. Where other halfbacks are content to kick for territory, Hughes is hunting. He records more line-break assists out of his own end than almost any other playmaker in the game. He understands that when the opposition expects a grind, that is exactly when you strike. While the rest of the pack is happy to bash-and-barge, Hughes is playing chess.

THE GRANT AND MUNSTER FACTOR

If the Storm’s defence is a foot on the throat, their spine is what steals the last breath. Harry Grant is the prototype for the modern No. 9 — a lightning rod for tired markers. The moment a defender leans or turns a hip out, Grant is through. If they over-adjust and turn in, he’s already put a charging back-rower into the hole they just vacated. The scary part? The opposition knows exactly what he’s going to do, and then, hypnotised, stand there and watch him do it.

Then there’s Cameron Munster. A big-game superstar who thrives in the chaos, Munster is the “X-factor” that ensures all that structure never becomes predictable. He plays as if it is impossible to fail.

2026 SEASON PREVIEWS

TIGERS: Madge irony Tigers can’t escape as ruthless overhaul sparks NRL reckoning

ROOSTERS: DCE domino effect: Inside $500k Roosters masterstroke

RABBITOHS: A Wayne masterstroke and X-factor arrival has Bunnies primed

Can Bellamy deliver another Grand Final? | 05:02

THE PRESSURE COOKER

The Storm’s true power lies in the transition. They build suffocating pressure through Grant’s ruck control, forcing opponents into a state of high-alert fatigue. Just when you think you’ve survived a set and can catch your breath, you look up to see a 13-man wall—compressed, aggressive, and ready to belt the tripe out of your back five.

It sounds simple on paper, but it requires unrelenting belief. With a roster featuring the aerial threats of Xavier Coates and Will Warbrick, the grunt of Stefano Utoikamanu and Josh King, and the precision line-running of Eliesa Katoa and Shawn Blore, the Storm aren’t just a football team. They are a machine that refuses to rust.

As the 2026 season heats up and the whips start cracking, don’t look for the Storm to fade. They’ll be right there—shaved clean and ready with something old and, you guessed it, something new.

STRENGTH

Experience. The Storm have a wealth of experienced players, most of which have been in the last two Grand Finals and some who have tasted multiple premierships, so they know what it takes to go all the way. However, the pain of back-to-back Grand Final defeats will burn Craig Bellamy’s men and they first need to work out where they went wrong and exorcise their demons to ensure they don’t miss their next opportunity to win it all. Despite the loss of Ryan Papenhuyzen, the Storm still have three of the best playmakers in the game in Jahrome Hughes, Cameron Munster and Harry Grant and the key will be getting those three to create more opportunities for their teammates when it matters most in the finals. The Storm are a well oiled machine and know how to win minor premierships for fun, but going all the way depends on star players being brave and stepping up to take the game by the scruff of the neck, as Nathan Cleary and Reece Walsh showed them over the last two years.

The Storm have premiership experience.Source: Getty Images

WEAKNESS

Spine depth. The loss of Ryan Papenhuyzen to retirement, Jonah Pezet to the Eels and Bronson Garlick to the Rabbitohs has placed a drain on the Storm’s spine depth and it could be tested if injuries strike in 2026. Now more than ever the Storm can’t afford Hughes, Munster and Grant to miss big chunks of the season through injury because there is little in the way of replacements waiting to fill the void. Sua Fa’alogo is now the main man at fullback, but if he gets injured the Storm will be short on centres if Nick Meaney shifts to No.1 as expected. The Storm’s depth made them the envy of the NRL for many seasons, but they are no longer looking as strong in that area and that will bring them back to the pack if their stars go down or even when they are on Origin duty.

Harry Grant doesn’t have a notable back-up.Source: Getty Images

IT’S A BIG YEAR FOR

Sualauvi Fa’alogo. The loss of Clive Churchill Medallist and premiership winner Ryan Papenhuyzen will be a huge void to fill and while Sua Fa’alogo has massive potential, he is not the finished article just yet. 2026 looms as Fa’alogo’s chance to step out of the shadow of Papenhuyzen and announce himself as a consistent NRL No.1. The 22-year-old has scored 14 tries in 22 games since his debut in 2023, including four in seven games last year, so he has the talent to be a success. But he remains untested with the grind of a full NRL season in one of the most physically demanding positions in the game. The most games he has played in a season to date is 14, but the Storm need their new fullback to play a full year if they are a chance of venging their grand final heartbreak.

Sualauvi Faalogo has some big shoes to fill in 2026.Source: Getty Images

WHO’S UNDER PRESSURE?

Jahrome Hughes. The New Zealand No.7 is one of the best halfbacks in the game as he showed in winning the 2024 Dally M Medal, but he was not at his best last season. Injuries didn’t help, but the Storm need Hughes fit and firing for the full season if they want to get back to a third straight decider and win it. And Hughes no longer has the insurance policy of Jonah Pezet to come in if his injury struggles continue. Firstly, Hughes needs to get his body right and then he needs to get back to the form he showed in 2024 because the Storm will be more reliant on their halfback, with Papenhuyzen no longer at the back.

Jahrome Hughes needs to get his body right.Source: Getty Images

THE RISING STAR

Josiah Pahulu. The 21-year-old burst onto the NRL scene in 2024 with 19 games for the Titans before falling out with the club over his contract and he was restricted to just three games for the Titans last season. Yet to debut for the Storm, Pahulu needs to have a big year in 2026, with back-rower Eliesa Katoa out for the season. Pahulu has the raw size and power to be an enforcer for the Storm, but he needs to step up after Nelson Asofa-Solomona’s departure to boxing. Pahulu has enormous potential, but the Storm desperately need him to realise it this season amid a couple of glaring voids in their pack.

Josiah Pahulu is yet to debut for the Storm.Source: The Courier-Mail

PREDICTED FINISH: 3rd

BEST 17

1.
