(Supplied.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">His wife Frances Collins (nee Adcock), an Olympian who represented Australia in swimming at the 2004 Athens Games, called for an ambulance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Doctors discovered Mr Collins was experiencing an aura, also known as a focal seizure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Five days later he was diagnosed with a brain tumour \u2014 it&#8217;s just shocking,&#8221; Ms Collins said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re a fit, healthy family that was looking forward to going on a camping trip that weekend and our life has completely changed literally overnight.&#8221;Family&#8217;s fight continues<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Collins has a grade two oligodendroglioma, which is a rare type of brain tumour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s heartbreaking, especially having little kids,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You just straight away think of your family and how you&#8217;re going to support them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man smiling at boy\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/c34dbe5e2d6f2eb9c375e6e0728b0af9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brad Collins, pictured with his eldest son Max, 6. (Supplied.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He found himself in the skilled hands of neurosurgeon Michael Colditz, who has since removed most of the tumour during an operation at the Royal Brisbane and Women&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Doctor Colditz explained he couldn&#8217;t go taking all of it [the tumour] because I might have lost a part of my vision so they&#8217;ve asked me to come back in eight weeks where they&#8217;ll check to see if it&#8217;s growing,&#8221; Mr Collins said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If it&#8217;s still growing, then they&#8217;ll put a plan together, whether it&#8217;s chemotherapy or something else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The family was shocked to learn there was no neurosurgery unit at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Collins said it was a struggle travelling to Brisbane while still working and taking their boys to school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re really hopeful that the next stage of the treatment can happen locally,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"doctors in operating theatre\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/74c323acf62bcc487d5eef48600cfd2b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A team of doctors and neurosurgeons performing an operation at Queensland Children\u2019s Hospital in 2024. (Supplied: Sunshine Coast Neurosurgery)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Byrne said brain cancer rates had risen along with life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s any evidence to suggest that primary brain cancer is becoming more common but secondary brain cancers or metastatic brain cancers are becoming more common with patients simply living longer,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Brisbane-based surgeon Sarah Olson, chair of the Surgical Education and Training Board for Neurosurgery, said it was &#8220;critically important&#8221; to have services close to home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;With this aging population we have, and a lot of them are up that way too [Sunshine Coast], it&#8217;s a big thing for them coming to the big city,&#8221; Dr Olson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re just not getting the same care as people in the city \u2026 they don&#8217;t want to ask relatives to drive them and their health care is compromised.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sarah Olson faces the camera smiling, as a person receives an MRI scan in the background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/51a13da1855ccf87dd473ab9b526e7cd.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sarah Olson says travelling to Brisbane takes a toll on patients, particularly the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Careful planning&#8217; required<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, Sunshine Coast Health chief executive Peter Gillies said planning was underway for new specialised services, including neurosurgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But he said a neurosurgery unit required a &#8220;highly skilled multidisciplinary team, specialised infrastructure and strong clinical governance&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Establishing this safely and sustainably takes careful planning and time,&#8221; Dr Gillies said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sunshine Coast University Hospital\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/584254a3da04252b4ca959ea4eb5dc71.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Specialists had hoped to see a dedicated neurosurgical unit at SCUH not long after it opened in 2017. (ABC News: Jonathan Hair)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A spokesperson for Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls did not address specific questions about establishing a new unit, but said the government had committed more than $10 million towards improving treatment access for people with neurological conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The funding will be used to establish eight &#8220;Neuro Wellness Hubs&#8221; over five years across regional Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The hubs have previously been described by Premier David Crisafulli as a &#8220;one-stop shop&#8221; for people to access support and services \u2014 but do not include a surgical unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Collins is unable to work while he recovers from his surgery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But he said his family had been heartened by the support they had received from the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man with bandaged head looking at brain picture\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1351b547d7465c02d63df379919562a0.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Brad Collins recently underwent brain surgery in Brisbane.
