with ticket scanning at Optus Stadium entry gates cause fury among AFL Origin attendees

Hundreds of footy fans were forced to watch the first moments of the AFL Origin blockbuster outside of Optus Stadium after a ticketing issue caused delays at gate entrances on Saturday afternoon.

More than 58,000 people descended on the stadium, ready to cheer on their home state as WA battled Victoria in the first State of Origin game in 27 years.

However, a recent change to ticketing meant the usually smooth process to enter Optus Stadium was anything but easy.

In January, Optus Stadium announced it would be rolling out a new enhanced digital ticketing system that involves near-field communication (NFC) technology and barcodes refreshing every 15 seconds.

But attendees were left stuck outside the venue when their tickets would not scan.

The issue resulted in staff opening turnstiles at the gates 20 minutes after the game commenced, allowing patrons to pile inside the venue without scanning tickets.

Many punters took to social media to express their frustration at missing the bounce down, with one patron sharing a video showing a hoard of people crowded together outside the stadium.

The clip, which has already amassed more than 44,000 views, shows the footy fan watching the opening quarter on her phone outside the venue.

“When footy season is supposed to be back, but class="css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0">The attendee wasn’t alone, with hundreds of fans claiming they could not make it into the venue until 15 to 30 minutes after the game began.

“30 minute wait at gate and missed half of 1st quarter — people were rightfully pissed off, what a mess,” one WA fan class="css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0">It’s not just regular fans who struggled to enter — one high-profile former AFL star was also caught up in the chaos.

Brendan Fevola, a former Carlton player who starred on the All-Australian team three times, got inside Optus Stadium “an hour late”, with his wife sharing a TikTok of the struggle.

The official Facebook page for Optus Stadium was quickly flooded with comments from disgruntled attendees disappointed over the delays.

“It’s a shame half the crowd missed the start (of the game) due to electronic failures at the gates,” one attendee wrote.

“Deciding to launch new ticketing on a day like (Saturday) was a really bad idea — Ticketmaster the stadium to issue partial refunds to fans who missed a chunk of the blockbuster’s first quarter.

<img decoding="async"
