But as Josh Hannay unpacks his bags, the question isn’t whether the sun will shine on the Coast — it’s whether this roster is finally ready to get dirty.

Hannay arrives fresh from the ‘Billy Slater School’ of high-performance coaching. He was an absolute warrior for Des Hasler, a lone wolf who never wavered even when the results did. But there is an alarm bell screaming in Hannay’s ear.

With David Fifita and Reagan Campbell-Gillard gone, the workload on Tino’s shoulders has shifted from heavy to impossible. Opposition coaches aren’t complicated; their game plan will be to ‘kill the engine to stop the car.’ If Hannay doesn’t find a way to share the load, he risks burning out his greatest $12 million asset before the Origin period even hits.

Get all the latest news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports NRL Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

“We wanna bring that trophy back” | 09:05

NO MORE PASSENGERS

For the Titans to evolve, the lieutenants must stop being ‘solid’ and start being scary.

Moeaki Fotuaika needs to evolve from a ‘consistent soldier’—to a General. He must set the tone, so Tino doesn’t have to. Similarly, Beau Fermor is a proven Origin rep. The days of being a ‘great line-runner’ are over; Fermor needs to be the alpha on the edge, the one demanding defensive blood when the pressure is on.

THE ILIAS INSURANCE POLICY

Perhaps the most underrated move in this reset is the arrival of Lachlan Ilias.

While ‘X-factor’ stars like Jayden Campbell and AJ Brimson sell the tickets, the Titans have lacked a steering wheel. Ilias isn’t there to score 80-metre solo tries. He’s there to be the adult in the room—to kick to corners, manage the sets, and handle the ‘boring’ parts of the game. If Ilias can steady the ship, it frees Campbell and Brimson to play ‘footy’ without the burden of overthinking the set play.

FROM ‘BEACH’ TO THE TRENCHES

We know what the Titans can do with the ball. On a dry track, they are the ultimate move the ball team. But the moment the momentum stops, they crumble.

Despite having Des Hasler in the building last year, the defensive resolve was often non-existent. Hannay’s biggest win in 2026 won’t be a 40-point blowout; it will be a 12-10 grind in the rain where the middle unit—led by Fotuaika and the emerging Cooper Bai—refuses to bend.

Josh Hannay has overseen a big shake-up at the Titans.Source: News Corp Australia

THE MIRROR OF ACCOUNTABILITY

A new coach brings new hope, but you can only hit the “Reset” button so many times.

The Gold Coast has the junior nursery and a fan base desperate for a winner. But for 2026 to be a breakout season, the people in the front office need to look in the mirror. They must ensure the environment supports the coach’s vision for more than just a few months.

Josh Hannay has the tactical brain and the cattle to make a dent in the Top 8. If they can protect Tino and find true grit, the Titans can finally stop being the league’s “if” and start being the league’s “when.”

2026 SEASON PREVIEWS

TIGERS: Madge irony Tigers can’t escape as ruthless overhaul sparks NRL reckoning

ROOSTERS: DCE domino effect: Inside $500k Roosters masterstroke

RABBITOHS: A Wayne masterstroke and X-factor arrival has Bunnies primed

State of Origin set for Kiwi clash? | 01:12

THE BIG BREAKDOWN — Ethan Lee Chalk

STRENGTH

The forward pack. The Titans may have farewelled David Fifita and Reagan Campbell-Gillard in the off-season, but they still easily have one of the best forward packs in the NRL. Led by Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, their pack includes Queensland Maroons representatives Beau Fermor and Moeaki Fotuaika, as well as young guns Cooper Bai, Arama Hau and Klese Haas. They can contend with any other team on their given day and will be the backbone of Josh Hannay’s systems.

Tino Fa’asuamaleaui leads a promising forward pack.Source: Supplied Source Known

WEAKNESS

Halves. Jayden Campbell may have been able to cement the halfback role but there are still plenty of question marks surrounding his halves partnership with AJ Brimson. The duo were only able to win three matches together before Brimson shifted back to fullback. During this period, they looked lacklustre and were unable to create any real positives. This isn’t the first time the Titans have struggled to find the right pairing. Over the years, Jamal Fogarty, Tanah Boyd, Toby Sexton, Kieran Foran and others have all tried to make it in the halves but have been unsuccessful.

AJ Brimson needs to step up in the halves.Source: Getty Images

IT’S A BIG YEAR FOR

Keano Kini. Limited to six matches last season after suffering a career-threatening spinal injury, Kini will be looking to recapture his form from 2024, which saw him make the fullback role his own. Admitting that he’s fitter and stronger than ever heading into this year’s campaign, he will need to lead the team from the back of the park if they have any chance of making the top eight. However, there are concerns that the 21-year-old may be unable to meet expectations straight away due to missing a ton of game time over the past 12 months.

Keano Kini needs to play a full season.Source: Getty Images

WHO’S UNDER PRESSURE?

Jayden Campbell. While all eyes will be on skipper Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, no one player at the Titans will be under more pressure than Jayden Campbell. Handed the halfback role last season, Campbell had his best season to date and was rewarded with a massive $4.5 million extension keeping him at the club until 2029. However, can Campbell continue his form this season? Although he was one of the club’s best, he was unable to translate his performances into victories and is set to attract the attention of more defenders who now understand his playing style better.

Jayden Campbell needs to deliver after inking a rich extension.Source: Getty Images

THE RISING STAR

Cooper Bai. The son of Marcus Bai, Cooper has taken the NRL by storm and is already being touted for a long and bright future in the game. Recently rejecting the Melbourne Storm, Penrith Panthers and Sydney Roosters to remain on the Gold Coast, the back-rower will no doubt add to his single NRL appearance. In limited time on the field, he made two tackle busts, 15 tackles and 76 running metres coming off the bench in his only match to date. This has seen him catch the attention of several greats of the game including Gordon Tallis, who labelled him as “pretty special”.

Cooper Bai is staying with the Titans.Source: Supplied

PREDICTED FINISH: 16th

BEST 17

1.
