economic management exposed as his massive pandemic-era spending agenda resurfaces amid attacks on Angus Taylor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jim Chalmers would have plunged Australia into deeper debt and deficit had he been treasurer during the pandemic as he attempts to discredit newly-minted Liberal leader Angus Taylor\u2019s economic credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Chalmers launched a fresh attack against Mr Taylor on Monday claiming the <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/entirely-irrelevant-treasurer-mocked-for-focusing-on-numbers-that-dont-exist-rather-than-the-state-of-the-australian-economy\/news-story\/ae2f7814f344ca9d6c04dea8394a72f4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"ae2f7814f344ca9d6c04dea8394a72f4\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">Coalition\u2019s 2025 election policies would have added $14bn to the deficit over two years.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This comes as he continues to claim his economic management has brought debt levels below Morrison-era projections.<\/p>\n<p>However, SkyNews.com.au analysed Labor\u2019s pandemic-era policy proposals and spoke to experts who have revealed Mr Chalmers\u2019 approach would have driven Australia into an even worse economic situation.<\/p>\n<p>In one shocking example of financial mismanagement, <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/coronavirus\/anthony-albanese-proposes-cash-bonus-for-australians-fully-vaccinated-against-covid19\/news-story\/70e2e5de03ef2957ac920a439a515feb\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"70e2e5de03ef2957ac920a439a515feb\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">Labor proposed a $300 vaccine incentive in 2021 for all eligible Australians to get their second dose of the Covid jab.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This would have cost the taxpayer an estimated $6 billion, despite Australia achieving a 97 per cent full vaccination rate without any incentive.<\/p>\n<p>Labor also proposed <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/labor-calls-for-free-rapid-antigen-tests\/video\/b9237654be0c0fcaab8cb2a6fc3c7747\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"b9237654be0c0fcaab8cb2a6fc3c7747\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">free rapid antigen tests for all Australians<\/a>, which was costed at $5 billion in <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/nation\/politics\/labor-covid-policies-an-extra-81bn-hit-simon-birmingham\/news-story\/46b6a3364224033bd77d03e9e41cd7b9\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"46b6a3364224033bd77d03e9e41cd7b9\" data-tgev-label=\"nation\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">modelling conducted by the Morrison government.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The then opposition even called for the government to <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/virgin-bailout-should-be-regarded-as-an-investment-albanese\/video\/31fb0620ed47a10c81ee1cf000405a11\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"31fb0620ed47a10c81ee1cf000405a11\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">bail out Virgin with a $1.4 billion taxpayer funded loan.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Chalmers was a key part of Labor\u2019s push to expand JobKeeper to two million visa holders and short term casuals.<\/p>\n<p>The then opposition also opposed the tapering off of JobKeeper in late-2020, while Mr Chalmers himself demanded an extension of the program in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Labor wanted to keep Covid supplement payments at the original level for longer and then taper it back in mid-2021.<\/p>\n<p>All together Mr Chalmers&#8217; suite of taxpayer funded subsidies and policies would have added more than $80 billion to the debt and deficit, according to the Coalition modelling.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0c39d4dcec066a64612aff598b326c1e.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Public spending in Australia \u2018took off running\u2019 as inflation uptick hits home\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This is of course on top of the $337 billion in spending by the Morrison government Mr Chalmers and Labor supported.<\/p>\n<p>Despite claiming he had delayed Australia entering into $1 trillion of debt compared to the Morrison government\u2019s 2022 projections, Mr Chalmers would have actually added almost $100 billion to the budget blackhole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point that needs to be made here is that in the budget that we inherited, we would have already crossed over $1t (in debt) a couple of years ago. This is the trillion dollars in Liberal debt that was left to us,\u201d Mr Chalmers told First Edition on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>UNSW Scientia professor of economics and co-author of \u2018Australia\u2019s Pandemic Exceptionalism\u2019 Richard Holden said Labor\u2019s large spending proposals could have exacerbated the mountain of debt already facing the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted JobKeeper to be larger and cover more people and be extended for longer,\u201d Mr Holden told SkyNews.com.au.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that would have made things worse for little economic gain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Coalition&#8217;s approach during the pandemic was extremely good and \u2026 on the whole, Labor wanted to spend more and it&#8217;s unclear what we would have got from that other than more debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/672cd6ff862b794cff8e61b8987f1ac5.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Jane Hume blasts \u2018irresponsible\u2019 Chalmers for refusing bipartisan support to control spending\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Holden also criticised the Treasurer comparing current-day performances to pandemic-era forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was a \u201ccheeky choice of counterfactual\u201d and claimed the comparison was \u201csort of meaningless\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume said the irony of Mr Chalmers\u2019 claims were \u201cbreathtaking\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s astounding that Jim Chalmers has forgotten about Labor\u2019s record during the pandemic &#8211; demanding more spending at every turn,\u201d Ms Hume told SkyNews.com.au.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad Labor had their way, we would have bought an airline, extended JobKeeper indefinitely, and pumped out cash for vaccinations you\u2019d already had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Industry Minister Tim Ayres was asked whether Mr Chalmers\u2019 latest attack showed a \u201clittle bit of hypocrisy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Ayres dodged the question when faced with Labor\u2019s pandemic-era spending goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been in government since 2022. We have managed that issue amongst others to mean that we delivered two surpluses (and) lower deficits following that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sky News chief anchor Kieran Gilbert put it to the Labor frontbencher that deficits would have been greater if Mr Chalmers was treasurer.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ayres said: \u201cThe deficits were what they were\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m not sure about what people may or may not have said or what people say about what they&#8217;ve said,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Labor\u2019s attack comes as government debt as a share of GDP sits at about 34 per cent and the 2025-26 budget deficit is on track to be $36.8b.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, public spending remains bloated and is forecast to hit 26.9 per cent this financial year.<\/p>\n<p>From the 1960s to before the pandemic, government spending was about 22 per cent on average.<\/p>\n<p>The large spending was confirmed by the RBA to be fuelling inflation earlier this month, as price pressures surge and the Coalition sounds alarm bells over the spendathon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Treasurer should stop spending his time calculating hypothetical numbers that exist only for his talking points and start worrying about the numbers that effect real Australians &#8211; inflation at 3.8 per cent, mortgages going up, a trillion dollars of debt, a $57b black hole, and deficits as far as the eye can see,\u201d Ms Hume said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel it everyday, Australians are poorer under Labor.
