(ABC News: Brendan Mounter)<\/p>\n<p>Closed biosecurity facility<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Queensland previously had a roadside checkpoint on Cape York Peninsula checking vehicles for biosecurity threats that could enter Australia from the north.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The former state government closed the checkpoint at Coen in 2023, and the current government was elected in 2024 on a promise to reinstate it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Moro and Ms Marriott said they both wanted the checkpoint reopened.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The [biosecurity] measures need to be adequate enough to make sure that the industry and the community is confident that no pests and diseases can come down from the Cape into some very important growing regions,&#8221;  Mr Moro said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A spokesperson for Queensland&#8217;s Department of Primary Industries (DPI) said consultants were engaged late last year to review the closure, which involved &#8220;extensive consultation with stakeholders in the region&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The report and its findings would be presented to the government for consideration in early 2026, the DPI spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A drone image of a boat with several men on board\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771278731_715_b450c74f9f603a6c41b32062323197a0.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A drone image of a foreign fishing vessel taken near Prince of Wales Island in the Torres Strait on January 22, 2026.
