(Supplied: Juanella Donovan)

For Donovan, storytelling is inseparable from art — and from family.

“It’s my mum. She introduced me to stories from my country from when I was a baby and onwards, the same way as she was taught,” she said.

Those early lessons shaped a lifelong commitment to creative expression. As a child, Donovan says, her determination to learn and create was unmistakable.

“I would run away from Augusta Park Primary School, through the sand dunes, and go to my aunty to do art — to paint and hear Dreaming stories,” she said.

Her journey is part of a broader tradition of cultural transmission among Indigenous women, according to curator Rebekah Raymond from the MAGNT.

“Women — Indigenous women — have always been such great storytellers, and the stories have been passed on from mothers to daughters,” Ms Raymond said.

“What is unique about Juanella Donovan is how she is using art to tell these stories anew.”

Ms Raymond said Donovan’s upbringing in a creative environment, combined with encounters with arts educators, helped forge important collaborations.

“She is lucky that she grew up in an environment of artistic practice. This, and meeting arts educators, created one of those moments of osmosis which forged beautiful collaborations,” she said.

‘Pushing the boundaries’

Marika Davies, regional curator with Tarnanthi, which showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, has followed Donovan’s practice for many years and says storytelling remains central to her work.

“Storytelling lies at the heart of it all,” Ms Davies said.

“Juanella is pushing the boundaries of Aboriginal art every time she creates a new artwork. She shows that Indigenous art is not just dots on a canvas.”

Juanella Donovan won her first People’s Choice Award in 2022 for her artwork Hold Me. (Supplied: Juanella Donovan)

Living and working in regional Australia has also shaped Donovan’s distinctive style. Limited access to art supplies has encouraged experimentation and resourcefulness.

“You need to improvise, and make a virtue of necessity,” she said.

NATSIAA winners announced

Gaypalani Waṉambi, Bulanjdjan Lucy Yarawanga, Owen Yalandja and Jahkarli Felicitas Romanis are among the winners at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.

“I use everything that comes to hand — many media, including human resources from my homeland, feathers, human hair, plastic, everything; ancient and modern, the new mixed with the old.”

The result is work that spans multiple forms and materials, blending traditional knowledge with contemporary expression.

“For me, art is holistic. I look at our culture as a whole, and this means art is integrated into my everyday activities,” Donovan said.

Holistic is the key word.

“To be able to practise art is a way of keeping our knowledge alive, and to pass it on to future generations in the same way as mothers feed their babies,” Donovan said.

“I sometimes call myself ‘a milking cow’. I am literally breastfeeding while I am doing art.”

Later this year, Donovan’s works will feature in the National Textile Triennial exhibition, opening at the Tamworth Regional Gallery in September.

For Donovan, the recognition is welcome — but the mission remains unchanged.

Her art, she says, is about continuity: honouring stories handed down through generations and ensuring they endure for those yet to come.

Multimedia artist Juanella Donovan, an Adnyamathanha, Luritja and Lower Southern Arrernte woman, has taken out the 2025 People’s Choice…

[5
245501,4624,64,63,99,167611,245499,44144,245500
post-484812","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-art-awards","tag-artist","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-business","tag-indigenous-artist","tag-juanella-donovan","tag-natsiaa","tag-peoples-choice
["GET
