Alex Young, associate director for science communication in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj500083j6sfgu4b5bp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This results in a glowing ring of sunlight surrounding the moon\u2019s dark silhouette, he explained, giving it the name \u201cring of fire.\u201d If the moon completely covers the sun, it becomes a total eclipse. A partial solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, but the sun, moon, and Earth are not perfectly lined up, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/eclipses\/types\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj500093j6spom0no9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The best view of the ring of fire will be from a sliver of Antarctica, with a partial eclipse visible from the rest of the icy continent, as well as parts of Africa and South America.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj5000a3j6sowgj03fv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Annular solar eclipses happen every one to two years, however many are not visible from most parts of the world. There will be another annular eclipse on February 6, 2027, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov\/SEsearch\/SEsearchmap.php?Ecl=20270206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA<\/a>, and it will be visible to larger swaths of South America and Africa. As for those in the United States, the next opportunity to see an annular eclipse will be in 2039, according to Young.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/nhq202404080101-origa.JPG\" alt=\"The second eclipse of 2024, a total solar eclipse, was seen over Dallas, Texas.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj5000b3j6s08xj0zrv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Eclipses come in pairs and occasionally trios. Astronomers call these groups of events eclipse seasons, Young noted, adding that \u201ca solar eclipse is always accompanied by a lunar eclipse about two weeks before or after.\u201d This annular eclipse marks the first eclipse of the season with a total lunar eclipse following on March 3.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj5000c3j6s2r6jn914@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The upcoming annular solar eclipse will be the first since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/01\/science\/annular-solar-eclipse-october-time-path\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2024<\/a>. During the event, the moon\u2019s shadow will carve a path 383 miles (616 kilometers) wide and 2,661 miles (4,282 kilometers) long across Earth, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/astronomy-essentials\/annular-solar-eclipse-february-17-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">EarthSky<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj5000d3j6sa9dgthgw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because the slim ring of fire only passes over Antarctica, many people will need to rely on livestream footage to view it. \u201cIt\u2019s all a matter of geometry,\u201d Young said. \u201cYou have to be in exactly the right spot along the narrow path of annularity to see it, which makes witnessing an eclipse like this so rare.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj5000e3j6s4g56ocq2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The annular eclipse will be most dramatic at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/in\/antarctica\/concordia-station?iso=20260217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Concordia Station<\/a>, Antarctica, beginning at 6:48 p.m. local time (6:42 a.m. ET) and peaking at 7:47 p.m. local time (7:12 a.m. ET), according to Time and Date. The event will last around two hours.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj5000f3j6sp6s00bjh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A partial eclipse will be visible across South Africa, South America and Antarctica, according to Time and Date.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj5000g3j6s8up22swb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Argentina and Chile will be able to see the partial eclipse starting around 7 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET). As the coverage increases to about 80%, shadows on the ground begin to sharpen and lose their fuzzy edges, the light around you dims, and shadows start to look curved, Young explained. \u201cIt sort of looks like something\u2019s taking a bite out of the sun,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj6000k3j6s5h39ao7c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the peak, known as annularity, the moon sits directly in front of the sun from Earth\u2019s perspective, leaving a striking \u201cring of fire\u201d around the edges. If you look at the ground through eclipse glasses, you\u2019ll see unusual, circular patterns in the shadows, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj6000l3j6st2ft74ru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s important to remember that it is not safe to look directly at the sun during an annular or partial eclipse without proper solar viewing eye protection, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/eclipses\/safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj6000m3j6skqyk9xzh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou need certified eclipse glasses,\u201d Young said. \u201cRegular sunglasses, even very dark ones, are nowhere near sufficient.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj6000n3j6soudijnzz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Partial and annular solar eclipses differ from total solar eclipses because there is no moment when the moon fully covers the sun\u2019s bright face. As a result, it is never safe to look directly at a partial or annular eclipse without proper eye protection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj6000o3j6sse7wncon@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you don\u2019t have eclipse glasses, you can use a handheld solar viewer or make a simple pinhole projector. To create the projector, make a small hole in a piece of cardboard. On February 28, sky-gazers can look forward to a parade of six planets across the night sky.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpezhbx00343j6sz8y9nggc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Visible shortly after sunset, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Jupiter can be seen with the naked eye depending on weather. Glimpsing Uranus and Neptune, however, may require binoculars or a telescope, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/watch-the-skies\/2026\/01\/16\/most-notable-2026-astronomical-events-a-year-of-watching-the-skies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">NASA<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj7000q3j6sggfgzu7r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Three days later, on March 3, a total lunar eclipse will be visible for those in Asia, Australia, the Pacific Islands and the Americas. The moon will appearing red, which is why it\u2019s referred to as a blood moon. This total lunar eclipse is \u201cthe last one visible from North America until 2028, so it\u2019s the one people should really have on their calendar right now,\u201d Young added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlpddpj7000r3j6sdx027sr2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sky-gazers can also look forward to a number of meteor showers throughout 2026.
