Key Western Australian government and football figures are determined to keep State of Origin<\/a> in WA next year, despite calls for South Australia to take on Victoria instead.<\/p>\n

Gun Channel 7 sports reporter Xander McGuire says it\u2019s understood Western Australia are \u201chellbent\u201d on retaining the fixture against the Vics<\/a> and \u201cplan to splash the cash\u201d in a bid to keep it in Perth.<\/p>\n

Origin ambassador and West Coast legend Glen Jakovich has thrown his support behind the push.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe absolutely want the rematch against Victoria next year,\u201d Jakovich said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly next time, we want a West Aussie umpire in the mix and no VB\u2019s served the week of Origin,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n

The tongue-in-cheek comment comes after Victoria led the free kicks 22 to 19 in the recent and highly successful State of Origin battle<\/a> at Optus Stadium.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, McGuire has revealed that the AFL is also planning to introduce women\u2019s representative football in 2026.<\/p>\n

Two options are being considered are Australia versus Ireland, or State of Origin, with a late July fixture or the men\u2019s bye rounds the early preference for scheduling (VIC v WA\/VIC v SA\/or possibly VIC v QLD).<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no better way to promote AFLW than putting 32 of the best players on one field and watching the standard soar,\u201d McGuire said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll give a snippet of how good the W can be after another 10 or so years of grassroots development bringing the floor of the competition up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The move would mark a significant expansion of women\u2019s football at the elite level.<\/p>\n
