Cross-border payments platform\u00a0dLocal<\/a>\u00a0has debuted a solution for Brazilian merchants centered around the country\u2019s Pix payments system.<\/p>\n

The new solution, SmartPix, lets merchants process tokenized Pix payments, including recurring and on-demand charges, without having customers manually authorize each transaction, dLocal said in a Wednesday (Aug. 6)\u00a0news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Pix has achieved widespread adoption in Brazil, it currently presents challenges for businesses relying on recurring or repeat transactions,\u201d dLocal said in the release. \u201cThe existing system requires users to manually authorize each payment individually, creating friction, particularly in subscription-based scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Central Bank of Brazil<\/a>, the release notes, has\u00a0introduced Pix Autom\u00e1tico<\/a>, which is designed to tackle the problem of recurring payments, particularly recurring payments with the same amount to the same merchant, like streaming or music subscriptions.<\/p>\n

The company says SmartPix fills the gap between Pix and Pix Autom\u00e1tico, meeting a need for more flexible recurring and automated payments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith SmartPix, merchants can securely store customers\u2019 Pix credentials, similar to card-on-file, and initiate charges in real time, even when the amounts vary,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis fully tokenized, one-click Pix experience means no more QR codes, no repetitive approvals, and no checkout friction. The result is higher conversion for payments, better customer retention, and a dramatically improved user experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Introduced by Brazil\u2019s central bank in 2020, Pix lets users send and receive money within seconds, and is used by around\u00a0three-quarters<\/a>\u00a0of the country\u2019s population.<\/p>\n

And as PYMNTS has written, it\u2019s been one of the catalysts for the broader embrace of digital payments in Latin America.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis shift is fundamentally reshaping\u00a0commerce and financial access<\/a>, with consumers and businesses increasingly favoring mobile wallets, real-time transfers and other digital tools,\u201d PYMNTS wrote in June. \u201cMobile devices are fast becoming the preferred means for payments, revolutionizing purchasing behaviors and actively promoting financial inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Research by PYMNTS Intelligence has found that Pix processed\u00a064 billion transactions<\/a>\u00a0last year, a 53% year-over-year increase, surpassing the combined total of transactions involving debit and credit cards by 80%. By the end of last year, the service was processing upwards of 6 billion transactions per month.<\/p>\n

Pix is also expanding beyond the borders of Brazil, thanks to a\u00a0recent partnership<\/a>\u00a0between payments technology companies\u00a0PagBrasil<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Verifone<\/a>.<\/p>\n
