GWS Giants<\/a> coach Adam Kingsley has shed fresh light on his nuclear rant at players during a game against crosstown rival the Sydney Swans last year.<\/p>\n

Vision of the half-time address has gone viral, after it was shared on social media by the 7AFL account in a promotional clip for the new docuseries No Holds Barred<\/a> (stream it free on 7plus Sport<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The compelling docuseries gives viewers amazing access into the Giants\u2019 inner-sanctum.<\/p>\n

And, as the title suggests, there is no holding back and nothing is off-limits.<\/p>\n

In the Round 20 game against the Swans, the Giants were 28-points down at half-time when Kingsley cut loose.<\/p>\n

During the break, Kingsley showed vison of one stoppage, and asked a player why wasn\u2019t he behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long have we been going behind the stoppage … behind the contest?\u201d Kingsley asked.<\/p>\n

The player responded: \u201cMost of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kingsley: \u201cMost of the year?? F****** three years! THREE YEARS!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

He then goes on to say: \u201cWe want to play on talent. Guess what they play on. F****** hardness and work rate.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single f****** time, same game.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re harder, they\u2019re tougher, we\u2019re weak as p***.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many f****** times can we get beaten the same way??\u201d<\/p>\n

In the rant, the beeper goes into overdrive with Kingsley\u2019s swear words beeped out at least 24 times.<\/p>\n

At one point, he turns to skipper Toby Greene, and says, \u201cYou know why, because you don\u2019t f****** stand up … three f****** touches in a half.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Kingsley has explained exactly what happened behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

\u201c(I was) not all that comfortable, to be fair,\u201d Kingsley said on SEN.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was one of those moments … probably the only time I\u2019ve kind of lost it or been as animated as that at any time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the lead up, it was a really important game for us, clearly, and Toby was pretty desperate for that sort of address to his teammates and himself … there was a bit of encouragement behind it which isn\u2019t seen in the documentary.<\/p>\n

\u201cFortunately it worked out OK. Yeah … we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kingsley said the blistering address was calculated and one to be used sparingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to be who you think your players need you to be at any specific moment and that\u2019s how I treat it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very calculated. It\u2019s very deliberate. There were reasons behind it obviously with the issues we were having, but you\u2019re deliberate with who you speak to, what you\u2019re saying, it\u2019s always like that when you\u2019re a coach.\u201d<\/p>\n

It certainly did the trick, and the Giants came out snarling in the second half, booting 12 goals to one to smack the Swans by 44 points.<\/p>\n

While that was last year, Kingsley is facing a new situation ahead of the 2026 season, and that is a major injury crisis.<\/p>\n

He has already lost best-and-fairest winner Tom Green for the season and has an issue with gun defender Sam Taylor who might need surgery after scans revealed a high-grade hamstring strain.<\/p>\n

\u201cSam has had scans and he is going to seek an opinion today,\u201d Kingsley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a hamstring injury and it looks reasonably significant. He\u2019ll speak to a surgeon today to see whether he does need surgery on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully we can avoid that but we\u2019re looking at a reasonable stint on the sidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Giants have a tough start to the season, too, with games against Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda and Collingwood in the first four rounds.<\/p>\n

The injury to Taylor happened in the State of Origin game and Kingsley said it might need a re-think.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me it\u2019s more about the timing of the (Origin) game,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we a much better chance of protecting our players if that game sits in the middle of the year if we have a unified bye?<\/p>\n

\u201cI think our players are a lot more conditioned in that time of the year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a long game, it was an intense game, there was a lot of run in it. It was fantastic to watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I just wonder whether or not the timing is in the middle of the year as opposed to February which is probably the highest risk month in the year for all, sorts of injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Giants also have concerns around speedster Toby Bedford (hamstring strain) and superstar mid Finn Callaghan (hip flexor).<\/p>\n

\u201cClayton Oliver is as probably good as there is in terms of like for like (for Green),\u201d Kingsley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re fortunate that we\u2019ve managed to recruit him because I think he\u2019ll help shoulder a bit more of the load now that Tom\u2019s not there.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the reality is we\u2019re not going to replace Tom and his quality. He\u2019s won a best and fairest, he\u2019s clearly one of our best players.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone needs to chip away. We feel like we\u2019ve got some nice options to go through the midfield and they\u2019ll all contribute in their own way which is all we ask for.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s plenty of teams that have suffered this. Back in 2004 (at Port) we lost Matty Primus and Josh Francou to knee injuries in the early part of the season and managed to overcome that. So we\u2019re drawing upon that at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
