Released in February 1996, the film helped usher in a new era of independent British filmmaking, and a wave of cinematic imitators.<\/p>\n
By the time it reached Australian audiences in late May, Trainspotting was already a critical and commercial hit, eventually raking in over $16.9 million worldwide.<\/p>\n
The film’s sex, violence and copious drug-taking sparked controversy over whether it glamorised, or condemned, heroin use. But it also oozed stylish panache, goofy humour, sincere pathos, and crucially, a banging soundtrack.<\/p>\n

Featuring an expertly curated cross-section of ’70s rock iconoclasts (Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Brian Eno), on-trend Britpop (Blur, Pulp, Elastica) and intoxicating electronica (Leftfield, Underworld, Primal Scream), the soundtrack \u2014 released 30 years ago today \u2014 was a significant part of Trainspotting’s cultural impact.<\/p>\n
Representing a golden era of ’90s compilation tie-ins (Romeo + Juliet! Pulp Fiction! The Crow!<\/a>), it provided overseas audiences with a Cool Britannia cheat sheet.<\/p>\n Encased in a CD bearing the same stark, orange graphic design language of the film’s memorable marketing campaign, the Trainspotting soundtrack achieved gold status in Australia and went triple platinum in the UK. Its success even prompted the release of a “volume two” in October 1997.<\/p>\n “The impact of the first film’s soundtrack was obviously something that we never expected,” Boyle told the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n “We just put all our favourite tunes on it, saw that it works, and everybody loved it!”Choose Life<\/p>\n Most films are lucky to get just one great needle drop<\/a> embedded in the Zeitgeist. Trainspotting boasted several.<\/p>\n The first arrives in the arresting opening sequence, where the pounding drums of Iggy Pop’s Lust For Life match the pace of protagonist Mark Renton (a skinny, sexy Ewan McGregor), tearing down Edinburgh’s cobblestone streets away from pursuing security guards.<\/p>\n The 1977 song takes on a heightened energy accompanying the now-infamous “choose life” monologue as the shoplifting sequence turns into a soccer-match-and-smacked-out montage that introduces us to our main cast of misfits.<\/p>\n Loading Instagram content<\/p>\n Then there’s the soothing ambience of Brian Eno’s Deep Blue Day scoring a visit to “The Worst Toilet In Scotland”<\/a>. Or how about Lou Reed’s elegant Perfect Day<\/a> given a fresh, harrowing take soundtracking a heroin overdose?<\/p>\n A nightclub sequence that morphs from battle of the sexes comedy<\/a> to a meet cute<\/a> and subsequent one night stand is set to Heaven 17’s Temptation, Sleeper’s stellar Blondie cover, and New Order wafting in the background of the morning after<\/a>.<\/p>\n In each case, the songs “matched and amplified key scenes, especially when they seemed incongruous”, as Double J music director Dorothy Markek noted when Trainspotting topped the station’s list of the 50 Most Memorable Movie Soundtracks<\/a>.<\/p>\n The 50 Most Memorable Movie Soundtracks<\/a><\/p>\n These 50 soundtracks make their films better, and stand alone as works of art unto themselves.<\/p>\n “The music is so intrinsically linked with the action on the screen \u2014 and later in our memory \u2014 that it’s impossible to separate them.<\/p>\n “Few soundtracks from the ’90s have aged as well. Or been as fruitful.”<\/p>\n Many would heartily agree. Publications including as Pitchfork<\/a>, Rolling Stone<\/a>, and TIME<\/a> have similarly ranked Trainspotting among the greatest soundtracks of all time.<\/p>\n Assembling an all-star roster<\/p>\n Spanning multiple eras, the star-studded soundtrack was designed to mirror the film’s own mix of highs (pun intended) and bleak lows.<\/p>\n “We tried to shape the chronology of the film through the music,” Boyle explained in a documentary on the Criterion Collection<\/a> release of Trainspotting.<\/p>\n The film loosely begins in the “mid-to-late ’80s \u2026 But by the time you reach the end of the film, [the characters] move through the house [music] scene and rave scene. And then we end up with Britpop”.<\/p>\n Trainspotting snagged many of the UK musical movement’s<\/a> reigning favourites: Pulp, who’d gone supernova with era-defining anthem Common People<\/a>; the female-fronted Elastica<\/a> and Sleeper, and Britpop titans Blur<\/a>, who were engaged in a media-charged charts battle with Oasis<\/a>.<\/p>\n The latter were a glaring omission from Trainspotting’s track list, kept off because Noel Gallagher thought the film was literally about people watching trains.<\/p>\n David Bowie \u2014 whose music is referenced frequently in Welsh’s original book \u2014 also turned down all licensing requests. (His track Golden Years<\/a> was the first choice for the “worst toilet in Scotland”).<\/p>\n However, Boyle says Bowie still provided a “big turning point” in helping access Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, whose solo material Bowie had produced.<\/p>\n The connection came at the suggestion of former EMI A&R staffer Tristram Penna, who was brought on to help compile the soundtrack after seeing a rough cut of the film.<\/p>\n Lust For Life was his idea. As he told Dazed<\/a> in 2016:<\/p>\n “I remember suggesting the song because [Danny Boyle and producer Andrew Macdonald] were continually upset that Bowie had turned them down. So, they cut it in with Lust for Life and it was transformational.”<\/p>\n ‘Drive boy, dog boy, dirty numb angel boy’<\/p>\n Beyond Britpop, Trainspotting presaged the mid-nineties ascent of dance, electronic and big beat music, where the likes of The Prodigy<\/a>, The Chemical Brothers<\/a> and Basement Jaxx<\/a> came for Britpop’s crown.<\/p>\n Trainspotting’s signature tune is Underworld’s Born Slippy (.NUXX): the thumping, euphoric shout-along that closes the film, and Renton’s narrative arc.<\/p>\n Loading…<\/p>\n A huge fan of Underworld’s 1994 album Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Boyle gifted copies to producer Andrew Macdonald and screenwriter John Hodge in pre-production, saying:<\/p>\n “This is going to be the heartbeat of the film. I remember them, especially Andrew, being a bit alarmed. ‘It’s all going to be this really heavy doof doof doof.”<\/p>\n The now-iconic Born Slippy almost didn’t make the cut. Boyle was already editing the film when he discovered the 1995 B-side while browsing HMV in London’s Oxford Street.<\/p>\n “I didn’t know they’d released it as a single. [But] I took it home \u2026 heard the second mix and thought ‘that’s the end of the film’!”<\/p>\n He reached out to Underworld’s Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, who were initially reluctant.<\/p>\n As Smith explained to VICE<\/a>, they’d get “frequent requests” for their music to accompany scenes of “dark\/drug\/club\/gang warfare\u2026 mayhem”.<\/p>\n Boyle convinced Underworld after screening them a sequence, and the duo sanctioned not only Born Slippy, but also Dark & Long for Renton’s disturbing detox sequence<\/a>, featuring a baby crawling on the roof.<\/p>\n A reworked version, titled Slow Slippy<\/a>, also became a recurring motif that haunts T2 \u2014 Trainspotting’s 2017 sequel<\/a>.<\/p>\n Danny Boyle was clued-in to the emerging 90s rave culture and originally toyed with the idea of Underworld scoring Trainspotting. (Reuters: Russell Cheyne)<\/p>\n Another influential electronic group that gave Trainspotting their blessing was Leftfield, who had released their seminal 1995 album Leftism before the film’s arrival.<\/p>\n The duo of Paul Daley and Neil Barnes had also supplied music for the title sequence of Boyle’s first film, Shallow Grave.<\/p>\n “So, we already knew Danny and got on really well with him,” Barnes tells Double J’s Karen Leng.<\/p>\n “They asked us to score the heroin-taking scene [in the bus toilet], which gave us a chance to do something slightly different.”<\/p>\n Tinkering with a newly acquired Wave Waldorf keyboard and a cut-up breakbeat resulted in the trippy cue, The Final Hit.<\/p>\n “Basically, it was a segue track \u2026 written specifically for the scene, which is why I think it works so well.<\/p>\n “I love that whole segment of the film.
