<\/a>\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\nThe concept behind Cycling Without Age is simple yet powerful: trained volunteers, known as \u201cpilots,\u201d cycle purpose-built electric trishaws, carrying two passengers seated comfortably at the front for gentle 20\u201325 minute rides along scenic shared pathways.<\/p>\n
Founded in Denmark in 2012, the movement has expanded to 3,500 locations across 51 countries. <\/p>\n
Australia now has 50 chapters \u2014 with Redlands Coast proudly the newest addition.<\/p>\n
The rides move at little more than walking pace, allowing passengers to converse with pedestrians and feel part of the community once again.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt restores what the founder calls the right to wind in your hair,\u201d Mr Bayliss said.<\/p>\n
While the trishaw may be the vehicle, Mr Bayliss emphasised that connection is the true heart of the charity.<\/p>\n
For many elderly residents \u2014 particularly those living in aged care facilities \u2014 the rides may be their only opportunity to leave the \u201cfour walls\u201d of their home. <\/p>\n
The simple sensory experience of sea air, familiar landmarks and friendly conversations can spark long-dormant memories and stories.<\/p>\n
The program aims to:<\/p>\n
Reduce social isolation<\/p>\n
Improve mental wellbeing<\/p>\n
Rekindle memories and connection to place<\/p>\n
Foster intergenerational relationships<\/p>\n
Provide purpose and community engagement for volunteers<\/p>\n
\u201cThese rides create a rare space where different generations can slow down, talk, and learn from one another,\u201d Mr Bayliss said.<\/p>\n
The initiative has already delivered emotional moments.<\/p>\n
The chapter\u2019s first special rides celebrated two birthdays \u2014 a 93-year-old and a 97-year-old.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 97-year-old was my mum,\u201d Mr Bayliss shared.<\/p>\n
He described watching her laugh and enthusiastically sound the trishaw\u2019s clown horn along the waterfront as unforgettable.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe hasn\u2019t stopped talking about it and showing the photos to her friends since,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt restored something simple, but powerful \u2014 the feeling of being out in the world again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Approved as an official chapter in mid-January, Cycling Without Age \u2013 Redlands Coast has already secured its first trishaw through a generous community donation. <\/p>\n
A second trishaw and permanent storage facility are also on the way, thanks to continued local support.<\/p>\n
Regular community rides are expected to begin in mid-April, initially operating from Raby Bay Harbour through to Raby Bay Foreshore Park. <\/p>\n
Future expansion may include routes at Capalaba Regional Park, Ormiston, Birkdale, Point O\u2019Halloran and Redland Bay \u2014 with safety remaining the highest priority.<\/p>\n
In preparation, the group is:<\/p>\n
Recruiting and accrediting volunteers<\/p>\n
Connecting with aged care homes and disability groups<\/p>\n
Completing safety training<\/p>\n
Building its website and social presence<\/p>\n
Applying for grants and establishing governance systems<\/p>\n
Mr Bayliss thanked Redland City Council for its early encouragement and community connections, noting that grant applications may soon follow.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are volunteer-driven. We are community-funded. And we are deeply passionate about this initiative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
